I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with bell neck birds? And do they come from a particular strain? Again I am looking for decent performance birds. I know most of it is up to me but I don't wanna buy birds that are just bred for color. They also look like larger type birds, or is that just me.

Pogo,

Bellneck rollers are a variety established by Thomas S. Monson (Sr.), from Utah. I dont know if he created them or not, but he certainly deserves credit for developing them as a distinct variety. Ive no idea what they are made from, but I suspect Birmingham rollers, originally. They're distinguished by a colored collar around the back of their neck, going from the base of the skull down to the wing joint. They're typically bulleyed with a fine eye cere and red legs/feet. They are approx the same size as a Birmingham.

They do roll, some. Having been bred for color and pattern for generations, they've lost alot of the performing ability and kitting instinct. The performance I have seen is a tumbling roll, neither fast, smooth nor deep. If you're looking for a good spinning bird, I advise look elsewhere. If you want a bird that is a good parent, calm in the loft and comes in red, blue and yellow, these might satisfy. I have owned several and know ppl who own and fly them.

A guy who used to come on here was trying to breed better roll back into them. Jared Peterson from AZ I think. I havent heard any progress reports ...

I personally breed alot of "Bell Necks" on one side of my birds,, However they just endedup that way.. I didnt breed for that marking at all,, As far as a perticular strain producing that marking Im am unsure. I just been breeding my birds for awhile and have noticed that I have been getting more and more with that marking... I also get alot of oddsides and sattles. I breed for performance and dont really sell birds or care what color they are..I was in a position in 1997 or so and was wanting some birds with more white flights and baldheads. The birds I was building at the time were mostly dark checks red check and blue bared. Thease"Ghost Town" birds worked well but I wanted somthing diffrent. I have the two families seprate,, and am happy with the outcome of the two. But all are welcome to my house to see the birds,,open inventation to all the good ones... Good luck.....1

Ty, Do you have any oddside birds ? If so breed your oddside's together and in a few rounds you will produce some bell necks. After a few years of selective breeding you will breed alot of them. It is like breeding baldheads in a since.

I have been to Mr Monsons house and seen the bellnecks and they are definately an attractive bird. He has bred them specifically for their appearance and they appeared at least half again as big as the flying rollers we breed these days. Tom does not fly them so as stated befor the roll has definately deteriated. Joe
