Starting to fly my first young bird kit and they are not rolling yet but they will put their wings out and kind of float in the air.Are they trying to roll or what?Been flying only q few times and they are about 3 months old.

David, Yes they are just starting to realize there is more then just flying. It will take a little longer before you start to see your birds flipping then rolling. Be patient, concentrate on kitting and training them to respond to the feed can or rattle when you call. Now is the time to watch for trouble makers, tree sitters or birds landing anyplace other then the kit box. Birds that fly out of the kit and birds that land early. I want to be clear, they are babies and need a little slack but one tree sitter can turn a kit into a bunch of tree sitters. If you have the space demote them to the bad boy's kit before taking more stern measures. Most of all, have fun this is a good time to learn your birds and how to manage them. :)

Depending on the pair that the young come from at my house. I have noticed when they first start flying that they either, glide or tail sit and develop from their. The gliders I have then start tail sitting a little then will just do a flip. Right now I have flippers mostly, and a few putting maybe 3-4 rolls together. And I am adding in new young birds so a few more times out with the expierenced birds and they will fly by themselves until they start flipping or rolling like older young birds.

Should I put any older birds with them or just let them pick it up on their own? David

An old hen or two will help them tremendously. They will show them the ropes and if you have B.O.P.'s they will help keep them out of trouble. :)

Thats good advice. Practically, I have all young birds(3-7 months). I have been starting late with my birds usually not until 3 or later months to fly. But the reason I am flying the young that havent been out is to expedite the landing, trapping, and homing. Almost every single new bird that I added with the experienced have spent a night outside only to show up later the next day. ONce Im confident they can land on the coop when I want them to, they will fly by themselves. ONly because I dont want them to mess up the flying and rolling of the birds that are already getting the hang of it until they can catch up.
