Why is it that when there are no witnesses, just you - alone, flying birds all by yourself the Rollers will kit tight, fly at a decent height, no out birds and really tear it up rolling fast and deep??? (but in front of others and especially during a competition, this is not the case)

Just curious:)

Hi Janet, I would guess your not the only one to experience this, I have only started in the hobby and I would enjoy seeing my birds perform rolling fast and deep.
I think some birds are like persons who sing like pros in the shower but freeze when on stage LOL!

Janet,
Some of it is just the odds coming to play. We watch our own kits so many times by ourselves vs. when there lots of ppl over to watch or on competition day, we are bound to see things then that are seen any other time.

It also could be that we out-think ourselves sometimes too. We have certain preconceptions of how to get the most out of a kit. In tying to do so, we actually end up harming their performance by doing some of the things we think we should do. "If it aint broke, dont fix it" applies alot of the time. My birds tank just to piss me off I think. Its their way of flipping me off and telling me to stick it in my @$$.

I have seen the opposite too. Not so much at my loft, but others. When I just drop by a guys place and we fly birds, there are lots of so-so performance days. But these same guys flying the same birds, regularly put on a two thumbs up show for fly day, time after time. I knew one kit in particular that seemed to recognize ppl in the yard. The bigger the crowd, the better the show they put on.

Hahaha...they must be "shower" singers Raul. Thanks for that perfect analogy. I have seen this same kit really turn it on for Competition day....but only after everyone has left the yard!!! Just 1 of those things and part of why we love Rollers right?

Hi Janet, I meant no sarcasm on my reply to your post! I am sure your birds have what it takes to put on a good show! Hey after all this is a hobby! I am in this hobby to please myself not to impress others. lets all enjoy the real purpose of raising these unpredictable creatures. And yes I agree that's why we love Rollers.
Keep on flying my friend,
Raul.

Hey Raul, no worries or sarcasm - I thought you described it perfectly and I completely understand what you're saying. I think this kit gets "stage fright" when there are vehicles in the driveway and other people around. I can see it in them when they 1st come out of the kit box...a moment of hesitation, almost panic and then they tend to fly too high. Like you, I will keep on flying.
