Hello Guys
I have finished breeding for this year and Im starting to split the hens and cocks , some pairs have one baby , my question is if I were to split the pair would the remaining bird finish raising the baby ( they are 10days old), and if so does it matter which one was left for the job hen or cock .
Thanks Rod

When we had a pair of rollers a long time ago, one got lost, and the other, the cock, raised their very young babies on his own.

Rod, breaking up a pair with babies is always a gamble. Best advice is to let them finish the youngster or at least to the point where the cock is doing most of the feeding. I move my babies around often as I have many pairs, but if you don't have the option of subbing it out to another pair, a few weeks more won't hurt them to wait. As a side note, last year I had a cock die on me for some reason while the pair was still sitting the eggs. The hen continued to sit so I let her. Turns out she not only sat them through another week, but raised the two babies by herself with no interest in looking for another mate. A rare event, but inspirational to see some birds devotion to their maternal instincts. Brian.
