I heard its good to put an older kit bird in a new young kit to teach them how to kit.I guess like a leader bird for the others. Is this true? Gonzalo.

Those rollers already know how to kit. They were bred for that trait also. I don't think kitting is learned, rather in the family of birds genatics. Some family have strong kitting ability just like homing abilities while other families lack those traits. Similer to high flyers in a way.

Jay is correct, it is in the family. You can not teach them to kit...they may kit in the being but if the family has kitting problem you will see that once they get mature...

You can put an older bird in with a young kit. I put a couple of my older or birds that are just a little older with them. I feel that the young birds copy what ever the old birds do...kind of like what they do with there parents. I feel it helps with the trapping and the older birds kind of slow down the kit and so on. That is just what I have noticed. I have noticed when an older bird hits a roll it kind of stimulates the younger birds. I have a cock and a hen that would really be culls for me...because they just do not have the depth and quality...they kit like glue and break with the other birds...and have the heart...but no motor...but I keep them around just to train the young birds...They are not aggressive older birds and you can put them in any kit box and they will trap to that box without hesitation..since they are so well mannered and do everything right but a kick ass roll...they just train the young birds....Once the young birds get into the roll and get a little older then I will pull my trainer birds. That is just what I do...I do not think that it hurts.

Paul,
Have you tried to breed this cock and hen together? Remember that the not so good rollers will produce champs sometimes. Refer to the "unpredictable Results" thread posted while back. Give it a try and check out the offspring. Just a thought!!
