Food Trays in the Kit Box…I first started with plastic trays and the birds would slip and knock food out…I then took a piece of light plywood and placed 1x1 around the edges to form a lip…this works better but how about you guys what are you using as feed trays….

I built mine from wood also. They are about 4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep and are covered to prevent droppings getting in. The birds always sit on top of them even though there are plenty of perches available. I have small spacers running from the tray up to the cover about 2 inches apart which lets one bird feed at each opening. Before I put the spacers in the birds would continually roam up and down the tray while feeding and push eachother out. Now they feed at one spot and everyone gets fed.

I use sheetmetal pans that are 24"x24" which gives plenty of room for a kit of birds. I always spread the feed around to cover the entire pan and oddly enough, I find that after a while most of the birds eat from the same location in the pan.

Brian,
Do you pull the pans after feeding or leave them in the kit box?

Coach,

I use the heavy plastic trays that Foys sell for the individual breeding cages drop catching tray. They are 23x23" in size and durable. They sell for about $4 each. They really work good and easy to clean.

Coach,

I use the long wood food trays from Foys #1070. The ones that have the white wire so that the birds can't get in the food. I use two for one kit box. When one kit is done...I move the two to the next kit. My breeders use the food tray with the wood dowls and a lid #1002. I am real happy with the wood feeders. With two 24" feeders I can feed up to 25 birds no problem. I threw my plastic feeders in the trash!

Highroller, I put them in to feed then as soon as they are done I pull them out. Each kit box has its own tray and I try not to mix them up. Just a little quirk I have I guess. The lofts have the traditional long metal ones with the spinner on top, this time of year I keep them full of feed as they are feeding young.

I use those large baking sheets, they are aluminum, you can buy them at Cash and Carry for about $8
the problem is you have to let them poop on them a bit so the acid in their poop will make the service less slippery.
They are great, scrap great, and spray off or bleach them no problem.
These are about 16" x 24" I think
