What would you do if you had a roller good type you liked
and this bird burned it up. It rolled with H style and showed a hole in the side.. The only catch, the bird rolled 4 maybe 5 times in 20 minutes.
Do you use this bird as a breeder?
Do you stretch his or her neck as a cull?
Lets say 2 different birds exist as above one you knew its background and history the other you knew only that it rolled well but seldom?

I would definately breed from this bird if it was fast and everything is good except only rolling 4 or 5 times in 20 minutes. You can breed it to a bird that is very frequent and that might help improve the frequency. Also How long has the bird been flying for? It might improve if it is a young bird. Especially when flown with other birds working hard and rollling more often. Some others may have a different opinion for you. I breed from late rolling birds also. Even with the hawk problems I like what Pensom wrote about finding the stable rollers in the later developing birds. He also said there is an exception to the rule but... Good luck Bill C

I agree with Bill. Age has a lot to do with it...you could try playing with the feed a little too! Cutting back or hitting the wheat may give it some more frequency....if it is a cock or a strong bird...it may be getting to much grub....try feeding it by itself and see if the makes a difference...either way...the choice of course is yours...another question is how does it compare to your other birds...if you have better birds....don't use it....if it is the best bird...put it with a couple mates and see if it produces. Just my thoughts

I think that it depends on a lot of things, but first I'll get the obvious out of the way and that is how hard up are you for such a bird ? If the bird is out of unknown background than absoulutly I would not breed out of it and add it into my family as there is no need to add such a bird. Second,if you do know the background, what are the siblings doing and how prepotent are the parents ? Is it out of a hybred vigor mating ? How tightly bred is the bird ? And due to lineage is such a bird needed due to the qaulity ? and due to linage is a stronger bird needed due to alot of heat within the line ?

Here is a true life senereo. In 03 I had a pair that I got 5 young out of, 2 cocks and 3 hens , The pair was faily tight as far as breeding but the cock was borrowed. Out of these I got one cock and 3 hens that were absoulute stock qaulity, they are 30-40 ft of excellant qaulity with very good frequency and have never bumped and are pushing 2 years old ( very rare getting that kind of percentage of stockable out of a pair, but nor have they had a chance to see if they produce yet ) that left one cock that did not show the goods as far as frequency and depth but he shows the same charactoristics as his sibblings. Who would give this cock a chance in the stock ?

Scott, I might just as an experiment to see if he could produce the goods. Also I might if the sibblings were no longer available but as long as I had the sibblings I would much rather see if they would reproduce the right stuff.

The particular bird in question was a hen I got from friend in Fort Worth Tx and was the only hen I had.lol I only had 2 birds at the time. This was mainly a hypothetical exercise. I bred from her with a bellneck cock I picked up from gentleman in west, tx. the pair threw a dunish bar bald head that was very frequent and had good style but was only a 10 footer! I've since learned I was doing everything all wrong! I picked up birds from here and there and all I had was a bunch of crosses!lol. But and that's a big butttttt I'm all better now!lol although I'm just starting out! after a 10 year layoff...I sure missed them(the rollers)except for my neck!lol . wish i had those crosses now lol! Oh yeah mother load I'll bite! if he had the style and velocity of his siblings I'd mate him to his most frequent sister. That is if I was tight on birds. MOst likely i'd like to see the brother with a stable of beauties...mom and sisters.

Scott, I always feel that I would use the best available that I had. Now in saying that I will add that with unusuall circumstances come unusuall actions and that would have to be for me at least that I had lost all of the others and one or both of the parents otherwise I do not put anything in the stock loft that doesnt have the goods in the air. Now on the flip side of this I have had to do this on one occasion back in 1997 and that bird is still in my stock loft and has produced some wonderful birds for me over the years. Ya just never know. Joe Urbon
