hello agian folks
i guess i see what a few questions can do to a whole system. ouch!!
ok on to bigger and better things. i have a kit of birds that i am flying and after some selective culling for dropper birds i have them in the air and they are starting to kit together. now i need to keep them there. they are giveing me 10 minutes of hard work and then coming down for the day. i have put them up twice a day and it doesnt make a diffrence. i have heard a lot of talk about the feed and flight time corilation but how would i tamper with it? i have 17 birds in the kit and am feeding abbout 1.75 cups of feed once a day. i am feeding a scratch mix. i tryed to add a high protien crummble and it was a mess!! whole wheat is not avalible here niether is milo and millit. any help would be great guys thanks chris just a note lets not start another fight over this one :)LOL

Age makes a difference. How old are they?

Hello, Try 2 cups for 20 birds/day and see if they fly longer.

Thanks, -Rauf

Hi:
You are feeding them too much.Cut them to 1 cup.then to 1 tblsp.per bird.I'm assuming these are mature birds.

Bullfrog, More food is not the answer and like Stan said, more than likely from your post these are young birds that just need to mature. I know that when the heat moves in here and the birds start wanting to come down early then I will box them all up and haul them up the road about 1/4 mile and release them. After a couple days of this they usually are ready to stay in the air for me alot better. Also 2 times a day is ok to do but not necessary. After the birds start to come into the roll you will more than likely want to revert back the other way and even every other day or every 3rd day otherwise some families will slow down on their performance. Just be patient and befor you know it they will be working just like champs. Joe Urbon

most of these are young birds over half of them are less than 3 months old. i have tried cutting the feed back or more honestly i started them on less food and have had to pull 5 birds out due to there condition! i plan to recondition them and put them back into the kit. one other question the dropper birds if i give them some time away from the kit would they have a chance of going up with the kit later when it is flying better? i ask this because i dont have many birds here to cull from and as i cull out birds i put them to the side hoping i can use them later i cull what needs to be out but i am hoping many of the problems stem from just being young. i have cut myself to a kit of 8 birds now and cant afford to buy many more replacements!!!! sssoooo if anybody thinks there might be hope in keeping the none flyers for a bit and reintroduceing them i would love to hear it. thanks chris

BullFrog,

Those are young birds. First give them a warm medication and feed them their normal ration. Fly them everyday, and when they come down or about to come down, use a flag pole to kind get them to fly again. I use the pool vacume handle, it extends to 20' and I tape a platic bag on the end. It works perfect. At three months, they are just very young, give them time. Don't cull anything at this age, Give them tell about 9 months b4 culling unless some are really asking for it. usually, they will shape up and clean their act. Give them about 3 to 4 weeks and they will kit very good and by then they will be tail riding and some doing a flip or two. They will come around later.

Chris at that age you should'nt have to be culling anything. You either need to look at what you are doing or the birds.

i am glad to hear the votes for the young birds. mother lode you are very corect in the fact that i need to look at what i am doing i have come to relize i am pushing the birds to hard. i have been learning the ropes here and havent found the boundrys where age and training meet poor performing birds!! i am trying to work these birds like a homer and if it can fly then i will train it. yes i lost a high percentage of birds but in the long run i had only the best and people were scrambling to get and race my culls. i am coming to see that that line of logic and thought doesnt apply to the roller world. i will set back cool my heels and wait for a while and enjoy the scenary as they mature. thanks chris
