Hey list, I was hoping I could get some help from you. Well I have a well breed hen that I would love to get some sqaubs from but because of her inexperience she does'nt want to lay on her nest with eggs in it and there is no cock since I'm polygamy breeding. Is it possible that I could put her eggs in a seperate nest's. Which will make a total of three eggs per nest. Your help and onfo would be greatly appreciated.

Hello ,
I dont think 3 eggs per nest would be a problem. I think highroller (he is also a member on this list) has tried this also and has had good results , not sure tho. I think it would be fine as long as there is plenty of food and water. Do you have any other larger breeds? I.e. Homers? If you do I would try and use this bigger bodied bird for 3 squabs , but if not I think the rollers could handle it. Just my opinion.

Hi Truword, Yes I have put an extra egg in a nest several times as well as adding a youngster to a nest after hatching all with good resulsts. I would suggest putting the youngsters in there before they feather out and the parents recognize them as not theirs. In your case with polygamy matings it is best to have foster PAIRS to put the eggs from your good breeders under. Dan

I have moved eggs around and babies. When I move the egg I will take a sharpie and just put a dot on either end of the egg and them record what pair the egg came from. Then when they hatch I take a sharpie and paint the toe nails on the egg that had the dot on it. Even when it gets older I keep painting the toe nails. It has worked for me doing that. Just a thought.
