I have been using Apple Cider Vinegar for a few weeks now. I am real pleased with the results I was looking for:

1: I feed pellets to my breeders and wanted to reduce or eliminate the odor created from the acidic droppings.

After several weeks of use I am happy to report that putting ACV in the drinking water several times a week has had a huge impact on the odor. I will never be without it.

My question, is anyone aware of the health impact on the pigeon due to using ACV as it might relate to internal parasites, bacterial illness or any other possible therapeutic effects? FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hello Tony, There is some good info on ACV at www.pipay.be on all articles page. Then if you use the search, in discussion forum, search apple cider vinegar, there the fellows have a discussion on dosages and benefits. What I found interesting is that it can be overdosed and interfere with calcium, something important. I had given it to these birds for about 3 weeks prior to the Dave Allen tonic, my main objective with it was to eliminate E-coli. Not a problem with it but I think its always there and the less of it the better. There is some good information there, that should help you out.

Hello, Jeff, I checked out that website and did some research like you suggested. Found good info there. I have found that I am getting more hatches from each round. Before seemed like there was always a couple eggs here and there that did not hatch, sometime small babies died in the nest while still very tiny. This has completely stopped.

As to the calcium, I use an eggshell grit mix and have not had any problems with soft egg shells. Perhaps is still too early to know of any long term impact...

Hello David, I spoke with another subscriber of ours who is into cancer research and we discussed the use of ACV the other day. He indicated that just a small change in the Ph level of the water is enough to change the environment to kill many negative bateria that attack the babies in the eggs and new hatches.

Question For All: IF the ACV destroys bad bacteria, would it not also destroy good intestinal flora as well? And if so, what is a good pro-biotic to remedy this? FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hello Tony, Since going online approx a year and a half ago that was when I became aware of ACV. I gathered it was being used mostly to acidify the intestines of the pigeons making it a hostile enviroment for E-coli and salmonella in general. I am unsure if it does the same for the friendly's.
On the same site pipay.be the fellows talk about useing yogurt as a pro-biotic although they are mixing it on the feed. Same thing, just a matter of searching yogurt.
I have been out of the pigeons for 9 years. It was racing pigeons then. I became interested in rollers after coming across them on the net. I've picked up a few birds and have had them since June. What I want to say is I have not treated these birds for anything and don't want to. Hopefully I can do this and avoid the pro-biotics thing also. I know the big thing with all that stuff is management. Clean food and water and keep the dust down. It's not that hard really and are really important to keeping the birds healthy. So far so good and I am quite pleased. I want to try and build them up and make them stronger than to tear them down with antibiotics. I think you guys know what I mean. I think it's good advice to the new people.

Hey Jeff, you are right, why use anti-biotics and have to use the tonics to put back what was lost. The ACV has been a fantastic addition to the maintenance of health in my birds.

To answer my own question about the other intestinal flora, I guess there is no negative impact as so far the birds look as healthy as ever and maybe even more so, and we have had a lot of rain in So Cal this year and some cold conditions so the stress of these conditions has not had a negative impact as of yet.

But I will keep my eye on them and keep you posted. Tony

I have used ACV for the past 4 years.Everything on the ranch that drinks water gets it.I use the regular vinegar for household use.I can,t get the vinegar with all the goodies in it without costing to much for shipping.I use approx.1 tablespoon per gallon of water.I don,t measure.Everyone I have told about it has good reports also.I too wouldn,t be without it.I rarely use any type of antibotics either.David

Bluesman, I started putting it in my dog's water on your suggestion... he doesn't seem to mind a bit! If he doesn't keel over maybe I'll start using some in my morning health shake. LOL
