Is it possible for a hen to lay three eggs in a round? Here's the deal. I have a hen who laid an egg on 4-25. No second egg arrived on 4-27, so I removed the egg and fostered it to another pair. Lo and behold she laid an egg on 4-28 which I left with her. Didn't check again until today, and she is setting on 2 eggs. She is in an open loft with five other pairs. All the other pairs are down on eggs or have young squabs. Where do you think this second egg came from. This hen appears to cycle strangely. I paired her up on 1/1/05. They prepared a nest and began brooding, but no eggs came. I put a wooden egg in the nest on 2/14 (romantic that I am.) On 2-16 she laid one egg. Second round came on 3-19 and 3-21. This is her third round. Do you have any explanations? Do you think that all three of these eggs are hers? Maybe she's trying to make up for the earlier one egg round. LOL Thanks for your input. Geo.

Hello Geo, as far as 3 eggs, is it possible both of the paired birds are hens? Could another hen have used the nest to lay an egg when the original pair may have been away and then chased her away when they returned?
Or perhaps it is just possible that your hen did lay 3 eggs as she has a strange cycle. Others have reported homers and rollers laying 3 eggs, though rare, not impossible.
Another thing to consider, it is my understanding that a hen can hold sperm in her system up to 10 days, if this is the case; is it possible that taking the one egg away and now having the empty nest triggered her system to produce more eggs as she would still have had the additional sperm in her system?
I have had a hen or two hover over a nest for several days preparing to lay and finally lay 1 egg and not a sign of a second one, I have also had the odd hen be very eggy and not lay at all.
Just seems there is always some exception to the rule that keeps confounding. The more we learn, the less we know. LOL FLY ON! Tony Chavarria
