I used to fly and breed out of an 8 X 8 coop set up for two kits on one side and open breeding on the other. I now have another double kit box next to it and use one of the old kit compartments for weaning. When breeding is done I can use one compartment for hens and put a third kit in the weaning side if I desire. I was much too limited with only the open breeding area and two kit compartments. Dan

Nick I keep 5 , one is for the A team and the other 4 are for youngsters. Four kits of youngsters is all that I can properly fly out, if they can't be flown out properly they aren't worth breeding. Three kits is even better and by late Fall when the days shorten it will be down to three plus the A team. By Jan or so it will be down to two and A team and by April it will be down to one plus A team, come March the new breeding season is under way and I start filling up the empty boxes and I am ready right now to send the last of the 04 breeding season that didn't pan out down the road as here in a couple of weeks I will need that last box for youngsters. I am just beginning to break up pairs and most are on their last rounds although I'll keep a few special pairs going a bit longer. I'll breed maybe 90 this year , I used to have seven kit boxes , but with that many it had me keeping more birds around longer that weren't worth keeping around and took focus off of birds up and coming with more potential. It is the same with breeding out of to many pairs , for me I loose focus. I find that a smaller operation forces you to hone in much tighter on the truelly good one's instead of just pushing nmbers to fill kitboxes.

Coach , right now I have 18 in the first round box , 17 in the second round box and 20 in the third round box. The first round box has been up for a bit and showing activity, the second round box has been up two weeks or so, and the third round box is just out with a few up, they will be airborn week after next. So obviously I will need to start making full boxes, I will take the strongest fliers out of the 2nd team and add to the first round, then I will do the same from the third round and add to the second box,all of this will happen in a couple of weeks by taking the strongest because they are the closest as far as feed to the slighty more mature box that you move them up to. Then I'll make the same adjustment when it is time from the fourth box to the third box and then just top off the fourth box. Once the boxes are full I'll band them with different color spiral bands which tells me what box they belong to, just easier to track and to keep from getting mixed up. In the Fall I'll start building a youngbird team when I have enough in the roll to put together somewhat of a team. All these are for me is potential for the A team come early Spring until they truelly prove themselfs out. Scott
