As long as I've been raising rollers I still struggle with sexing nestlings accurately on a consistant basis. Of course there are some color combinations that we all know will produce certain colors in the offspring. I've learned this pretty well but what about a pair of blacks that produce the same? Or whites? two blues? etc... How are you guys sexing these? Allen

I had read in the nbrc magazine that if you look at the but of the small chicks when they are only a week old and only have the yellow hair on them, all the boys will be smiling and the girls will be frouning. Some have told me it really is true but you can test it out. ( turn this up and it will be a boy ) turn this up and it will be a girl. Do you get what I mean? You have to look at the rear end to see the froun or smile. Bill

Hey Bill,
I saw something about that but have never looked in to it. Has it worked for you?

Allen. There is also one about the one toe being longer.I forget how it goes but have it wrote down somewhere.I never could prove it out.Along with anything else.If they arn't sex-linked matings I can,t tell untill they get old enough to breed.Sometimes then I am wrong. Some of my cocks have laid eggs.LOL. Another thing is, is that you dont always get 1 hen 1 cock, per nest. My friend had a pair that would throw him straight cocks! He bred several rounds I think he bred somewhere around 5 or 6 cocks and only 1 hen! Just something to remember.

The smile thing is actually used to sex baby chickens. Though I really don't care what sex they are and some are known simply by their color, it does in fact work. You have a small window to check which is about 3-4 days. For some reason after that it becomes hard to tell the difference.
Caleb, I have one pair that I kept together for about 1.5 years and they threw me 16 hens and 1 cock in that time frame.

Aside from sex-linked matings, I am not sure of the other methods. I know of a guy who swore up and down about the toe length theory so we tested him. Gave him a guaranteed, 100% sex-linked hen and he said it was definitely a cock. Same bird laid eggs several months later.

I have used the frown and smile thing and have been wrong. I have used the size of the nostral and have been wrong.
Another indication is the voice. The cock has a destinctive voice even as a squeaker........and the one that lays eggs is always the hen...............LOL.
