Kelly, as it's nearly a year on since you talked of getting your doneks, can you tell us how they've been in terms of training and what you're getting out of them. Are they as dim as some mentioned? Have they been very difficult to train? What's the proportion of divers to those which don't. Would you acquire them again, knowing what you know now?

Cheers,

Shaun

Shaun,
At first they were hard to get to elevate to any height.I was flying them with a roller but t6he roller would only go 1-200 ft up so the Doneks thought that was as high as they needed to go I guess.Apparently it is best to train them with tipplers which fly high. Finally one day I noticed they got all excited when i picked up a towel that was laying on the ground outside their loft so I went in there flapping that around with the door open and out and up they went. Now,using that method to get them out I have no problem getting them to elevate and I've had them up about a 1000 ft before I get nervous and put out a dropper bird to bring them down.Once one starts to dive, they all follow,ALL diving. They all dive but the older ones which were born last fall spin the best. They have to dive to keep up with the speed the first one comes down,as they come from 1000ft to the roof in about 10 seconds. They don't kit of course but they all land together and come into the open door of the loft together. They are the most freindly birds I have, landing on my hands outside the loft when they are hungry, and not mean on the nest like my homers and some of my rollers.I haven't lost any to overflys, but an eye must be kept on them as they seem to want to keep going higher and higher till I put out a dropper bird.Yeah,I'd get them again if I was starting out again.I'm soon to get my hands on some Orientals too.I love to watch the way they all perform differently, the 3 breeds I have.

Well, Kelly, you certainly make them sound more fun than other comments I've read. Mind you, Steve likes his a lot, too. I'm thinking ahead to winter when I have to lock down for as much as 6 months, due to sparrowhawk attacks. I like the idea of flying another breed which could hopefully evade most of them.

Shaun,
If you have the space,go for it!!!You won't regret it.Some guys fly them out of a kitbox too,eh.That can save you the building of a loft just for the flyers.I have my two pair of breeders in with two pair of homer breeders and they get along fine.Right now I'm fostering every second Donek round to the homers as some other guys in my area want some to try.
Cheers mate!and what do they say over there???Up yer kilt!!!
