Folks - I'd just like to point out a few observations. Cliff is absolutely correct in his statements. If it hits home, you're most likely guilty as charged.
Here's the facts. Birmingham Roller=Performance. That's the standard. What many of you are forced to avoid or accept, depending where your priorities are, is a little something called COMPETITION. If what you have doesn't fit into the small little square box that constitutes that which everyone you circle yourself with, you either strive to obtain it and improve upon it or you make the decision to discard and rant and rave about the inpurities of other birds that fall outside of that box.
Now I've seen a whole slew of pictures posted and discussions where people don't even claim to have the esteemed Birmingham Roller. Yet the relentless criticism and skeptism of anothers' birds continues. Again, if Cliff's post hits home...well you be the judge.
My personal thoughts - The Birmingham Roller doesn't exist. It was ruined years ago by competition. Is competition with rollers a bad thing or evil among the hobby? I don't believe so. Unless you let it rule your choices, decisions, interactions, and overall enjoyment of the hobby. I've seen it in the latter form. Not pleasant by any means. Some move away from it, others embrace the empowerment they feel to be involved in the competition circuite.
To expound on my personal beliefs, the Birmingham Roller, the Competition Roller, and the for lack of a better term, Backyard Roller are technically different breeds. I'm not even talking about color here. The birds are strictly bred for different purposes, features, characteristics, and other attributes abroad.
Ken Billings once told me, after many heating discussions on this forum, to enjoy what I do and fly my kit of mongrel rollers. Why would he do such a thing? I think because we finally realized, together, that they are indeed just pigeons. And that learning from each other is much more important that trying to argue a meaningless point of who's right and who's wrong. Even if you had a time travel machine and went back 300 years, it wouldn't make a bit of difference to what we have available to work with in today's world. The diversity, the complexity, the opportunity these "rolling birds" offer to any fancier is to fufilling and variable for there not to be an opportunity for many people of different likes and dislikes to NOT enjoy and "play pigeon" with one another.
Something for thought everyone....
Eric

Hector Gordon Daffurn has crests with the look of that picture and i would love to speak with Gordon about his crested birds and what family he flys. It just amazes me i have been all over the UK watching numerous competition and never once have i stumbled upon a crested bird i am not saying theres non over here that picture speaks for itself just that i aint seen any. A friend of mine Paul Chantry has a few tufted rollers and thats the nearest ive seen to a crest. Les Bezance no longer flys in competition so i have never been to Les Bezances loft so i cant speak on Les Bezance behalf just so curious on this subject. Hector you sure you aint sent Gordon any of your birds over here ill have to ask Stan the same question Lol ---------- Regards W@yne UK

Hi Birmingham Roller Fans One thing that every one must keep in mind is that a lot of advances come from experimentation. I will mate a deep bird with a too frequent bird, that’s not at all best to best, just plain ole experimentation. I have all the birds I want to play with so don’t plan on trying to get bigger muffs, the boots I get once and a while are enough. I don’t plan on playing with crests but I will say that they do look pretty darn good. My kids tell me that everything I do is an experiment. Is mixing families an experiment, you bet it is and yes I do it. I keep pure birds and them I always have some to mix, is it hi-breed vigor or experimentation??
That brings us to the bottom line, argumentation & experimentation is one of the best thing going on in these posts. It gets everyone thinking about their birds and what direction they want to go. Best to Best and/or toss in the twist, does it roll, it’s a keeper.
Experiment on and keep the rest pure. Robert Miller Fire Brewed Rollers

Various traits in pigeon breeds are simply genetic mutations that are played upon by breeders. The roll gene is one of them. There are way to many distinct show and performance breeds of pigeons that do exactly what they are supposed to to think that all crested birds come from crossing that "1" crested mutation that started it all to produce crests or muffs or any other trait that can be played upon in all the various breeds that produce it. I dont know the back ground of these birds but i contest that a pedigreed pensom as pure as the driven snow could produce a crest or even web feet or extra tail feathers or extrodinarily long legs or any other mutation that could be cultivated and reproduced.

Best Dun-Check Birmingham/Performing Roller I ever did see in a picture LOL!!!
Val - I agree with you. But even still, at least the bird was shown, exposure to the breed/hobby obtained, and if Kenny received a plaque out of it then kudos to him and the bird.
Eric
P.S. - Never thought I'd see the day when a Dilute Roller would win anything :-)

OK The bird is 20-30 footer. Not real frequent nice style, good kitter. Out of Turner/Peterson pair. Overall just a good kit bird. I get several of these dun birds each season and they are usually really hot. I am glad I got a couple that weren`t a pain in my derierre. Rudy has one. Tell em Rudy...
The class is for performing birds.I flew this bird the day before I took it to the show. There were some homers there that beat me last year. They felt really good. I held the second place bird,I was chasing birds,I knew I was beat. To my surprise the judge chose my bird. He said; "It was the closest to the standard of any bird in the class. It was in good condition, has good feather and nice station."
Val, if you are thinking what I think you`re thinking we are thinking the same think. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!

I'm thinking "Jenny Craig"! LOL Hope that I didn't offend you, I'm sorry if I did! I've seen a lot of pictures of your birds and this one didn't seem to fit!
I am fixing to make a show, is this bird puffed up or is that the standard! I need to get some corn, if not! LOL ---------- Val

Not for me I am svelte as I was 10 minutes ago.
Val, She is just in flying condition, It`s what she looks like all of the time. She might be a little puffy now that I look at her, but fat she ain`t. She has a nice stance and good balance in her build. I look at em like one of those glass birds with the red stuff that "pecks" at the desk. Thats balance.

Val,
Give your birds "Top Plus" for the show. It does wonders. It will put your birds in top condition fast and make their plumage glow like a gem. You will be glad you did.

No. They will fly for four none stop hours. Only as I stated in the prep for comp post.
When I have youngsters that been flying for a month, I give them a little to strength them up a bit. See how some pepole post complaining that their youngsters don't want to fly or they land on top of trees and so on. It will avoid all those problems.
