Thor,
I wasn't in on the certification of that bird, so I really don't know how it was judged. I agree
that certifixation should really be a multiple step process the way your club is doing it.
I was thinking about posting the certification rules that my club worked out.. I bet they are
something like your clubs'.

This bird here is a bird I am still flying with my old bird team. He is a '06 bred that I would consider to have great style and velocity. He can really let it go in the velocity area when primed. A little short in depth tho 15 - 20'. I love watching this bird in the air but on the ground, he is just weak. Nothing says special when looking at him on the ground. I have written him in my books as being weak in all departments but performance. His colored eye side is nothing special either. He is pegged for the kit box for life.

Paul, I am interested in seeing the "PROCESS" that your club used to use!

Thor, he looks like he has been working hard! There is a big difference in a kit bird and a stock bird!LOL

Guys,

I posted this bird to represent one that is weak in character and expression. Thanks for the kind comment any ways :)

I walked into the cock holding pens (my old kit birds were on Winter lock down) the other day and pass by this bird 5 times before I noticed he was even there. I was snatching all the cock fliers and caging them on the roof to remind them that they will eventually see the sky again - also keeps them sharp on their surroundings. Any who, this guy here does not stand out in the crowd one bit. Maybe it is his bull eyes that plays this trickery that he isn't any thing special. Maybe it is because he is very calm and this causes me to pass by without noticing him either. Maybe it is both...

I don't know why but he just doesn't stand out on the ground - especially in a group. Put him in the sky, well that is a whole different story.

Thanks for the kind words, just wanted to show an example of a poor expression/character bird... I could never take a good photo of him. Maybe it is not the camera but the bird himself :)

Page 50....
"It is a fact that every type of individual... is capable of spinning to the highest degree, and it is for this reason that the breed is so full of disappointments. In the other direction we have full proof of there being one type of bird worthy of our utmost consideration with which we can better uphold the breed in its highest character.
It is of course reasonable to suppose that if a bird does roll and perform to standard it must be of correct type, and carrying with it all the essentials required for the bird to qualify for the stock pen. This, however, is not so, as many years of constant breeding by fanciers has proved. If it were true that every perfect spinner in the air was also an ideal stock bird. our task would become simple for we would never breed any undesirable pigeons......... Bill Pensom

Thor a 97 yr old certified spinner!Now that's something to shoot for.......LOL !

On another note:We are always talking about performance 1st,so why not breed that black & white if it has such awesome velocity! That's the #1 trait we shoot for in our birds. You must have a lot of good birds!

Paul,
This is true.
But how many time have you takin that great spinner and gave it to someone else just because it did not meet your standards as a roller on the ground just to see that same bird one year later looking like and breeding like a champion. And your saying to yourself, OH S@IT, did I really move on from that bird....LOL The bird does not even look like the same bird. Thats not every case, but it has happened to me more then once......lol

Yeah Ray,
These birds can really get ragged and stressed out sometimes, especially when they are in the middle of a molt. You can forget how good they looked as squeakers right out of the nest too... and then thet get ugly. But after filling back out and feathering out...BANG there they are ..looking good..!!

Luis,

I still have his Dad kicking them out for me in the breeding pen. Plus, I have better birds flying then him in the air. Not only that, I don't have the time to take care of any more stock birds. Right now, it is about replacement of breeding stock, not about adding. I am close to my ideal numbers 6 pairs. That is pretty much all I have time for currently.

Not stocking has done my flying program a load of good. Let's see how things go this year as our first fly is in March. Master Flier again would sound good under my belt.

The Black badge Cock just doesn't impress me enough to replace any cocks in the breeding pen bred down from his line. I have his father, a full Uncle, a half Uncle, and a Uncle working for me from this line that are producing the goods all ready. I need him more in the air for all to enjoy - well more for me than any one else.

Thor, the certified cock bird that Gomez commented on was bred in 1999 and was certified in 2001. He flew three seasons but was 2yrs old when certified. AT that time I didn't lock down for the bops. I flew all year long. He was a R.O.M. COCK in my loft.

Luis,

Not a good time to take photos. Our highs are expected to be below freezing for the next week or so. I'll try to get some photos of my current team when the weather warms up. I have a Uncle that is just about the same in quality but a tad deeper that I have my eyes on. This particular bird is in the 30 foot range. He has the stronger look and is more appealing to the eyes on the ground. The bird pictured above and the Uncle were both 2006 bred and have flown the same amount of air time. Gives you more of a closer comparison in my eyes than comparing a Mature stock bird to a flier. Reason why I had my eyes on the Uncle is because the father to it is a 1991 bird and is showing his age.
current=IMG_2737.jpg" target="_blank">Photobucket

Father to Black Badge above - Red Grizzle 2004 bred taken right out of the kit box in late 2005 for a photo before I stocked him. Looking at him now, you can not tell they were the same bird. I'll try to take current photos when this season.

Elfrin,
Thanks for posting those photos of a bird that was certified. IM not quite sure how people come up with this idea that performance and type do not go hand in hand. Take a good look at that bird. I bet that bird feels real good in the hand as well. GREAT LOOKING ROLLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the look and feel of a good roller.. You can learn as much from the birds as you can from what
people tell you about the birds. Look at your best spinners.. Handle them... The birds can teach you..
What pepole say can be very confusing to the new breeders.. Paul
