Tony,
That saying has a different meaning to me. Maybe it is just me here but when I hear that, it means that if you wanna talk... let the birds do it. It has less to do with competition flying.
I have visited a couple of lofts where the owner refused to fly his birds for various reasons. They either were just fed, just flown, etc. What is the use of planning a visit to see birds fly if you are not gonna put them up. I can understand if he had a major hawk problem or just had no birds left from a recent over fly. All tho if the kit box is filled up to the top and I traveled some distances, I would like to see some thing fly. I could care less what they did in the air... just would like to see any thing in the air.
Just me, Thor

I'm almost at a loss for words, almost. Anyone who thinks the only worth while breeder flys comp. and that so-called backyarders are worthless just turns my mind into a muddle spinning in a blender! There are, has to be, thousands of true die hard roller people flying hard, keeping only their best year to year. Planing, dreaming, failing, and on the rare occasion, success. Yet the persevere! Why? I have made no secret where my stock comes from (TONY) I also do not hold Tony responsible if I mismanage or totaly screw up his hard work. This being said, I HAVE NOTHING TO PROVE TO ANYONE BUT MYSELF! I will fly hard, cull hard, keep only the best! With luck, I will maintain and on the rare occasion, possibly succeed. I will enjoy this with my wife, grandchildren, friends and neighbors, but I will probably never fly in competition, guess I'm worthless.

There it is. I can kick a 60 yard field goal, but I don`t have the right shoes. I can run a 1/4 mile in 50 secs, but I pulled a quad last week. I can hit a 400 yard shot right down the middle of the fairway, dammit I left my favorite driver at the house.
My car is good for 11 SEC 1/4 mile, but its in the shop right now.
I get full turns all the time, but I flew em yesterday.

I think the people that got their feeling hurt are afraid of failure. I was going to fly the Vegas fly,i fly the W/C,I fly the F/F,and i fly my Club fly's,not becouse i think my bird's are the best but becouse what ever they do it's all for fun,my image dont get hurt if my birds dont do anything, My feeling's dont get hurt if i DQ.but the fun i have showing everyone my birds the day of the fly,Priceless. I was a back yard flyer like everyone was at one point, but ther comes a time you have to try and see if your birds are as good or better than everyone elss. So PUT UP OR SHUT UP .
It's Just a catchy Name to the Fly, It sound better than lets have a fun fly ,fly So chill out : LOL: ---------- Hector Coya - SGVS

I'm not sure where or what kits you were looking at when you seen all those Dq's, non rolling, outbirds, ETC, But I spent some years as a Local area director under Juan Navvarro when he was that reginal Director in region 9a and I can Honestly say that on the World Cup prelims and Fall fly prelims I seen very few Dq's, out birds, non rolling, Etc.
Of course theres allways gonna be a few here and there but its no different then when a Racehorse fails to make the course or when a race car breaks down during a race, things are Gonna happen .
I had guys tell me they didnt want to Fly becuase there Birds wernt doing anything and I talked them into flying to support and on fly day there Birds were smoking !!
As far as forcing anyone to Fly by peer preasure I never seen or heard of that. we are all grown men and we all decide when to open the kit box door or when not to.
I believe its everyone choice if they want to Fly or not But if someone ask for donations for a show or something else ,then I feel they should support the Fly's by entering a kit whether they fly or not.
and there are alot of clubs that ask for donations of birds for thier auctions yet they never support the FLYS. And yes they do make a FAT profit, those that dont believe that are just being naive.
Any way It all comes down to CHOICE but the PUT UP OR SHUT UP Fly is only meant for those that actually fly or the ones that always claim to have good kits or Champion Birds but dont Fly.
I havnt seen anyone make those claims here on your website but if you ever attend a Show in Southern California were some tall Boots because the BULLSHIT is thick when you get around alot of Roller dudes.

Hey George, you are telling me you have never seen any of those items I listed at competition flys? Come on now...
George, I raised rollers in So Cal from 1993 to 2005, I have been to shows and flys, more shows and more flys, I have heard it all too.
I am not talking about the guy who brags about having the best and finds a reason not to fly or whatever, I am talking about those who are into the Birmingham Roller as a breed and who's goal is to fly the true or ideal Birmingham Roller sans the competition.
Perhaps I wave some wires crossed but I have been getting the impression from a post here and there that these sorts need to put up or shut up. I think there are many who don't fly competition who believe they have rollers as good as or perhaps even better than anything that is flying competition.
It is this group that is being told to put up or shut up. Correct me if I am wrong. (would not be the first time! LOL) ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hey Jon, I agree with much of what you said. Getting feedback on our efforts is always valuable and when said with the right attitude can make a tentative roller breeder into a fancier for life.
Going out and seeing kits better than our own can be very instructive and be a good measuring stick of our own programs. But the fancier has got to be willing to be objective because some still won't believe there lying eyes. LOL ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

No I am not saying I never seen all that stuff , It just wasnt very common .
If a newbie reads your post he might think its not even worth going to watch a Competetion Fly.
I know Keith and I believe he made the fly to give everyone a chance to Fly in another fly other then the FF prelims and World Cup prelims.
I know for a fact that Kieth would never verbally attack a Fancier for not wanting to fly in any competetion.
Any one that knows Kieth know he not that type of person.
I really do think that some how all of are wires are crossed on this subject( Put Up Fly )

Hey George, I spoke to a fellow who will remain nameless who has judged allot of flys. I was told that many kits he judges are not hardly worth the effort but did so because that's just what you have to do.
Saying that, a newbie would stand to benefit from seeing the competitions and even participating should he be so inclined.
Maybe there should be different levels of competitors, maybe a junior and a senior classification or something. Like Joe Dan said, there is nothing like winning and if a newbie can win, you probably have another lifer on your hands! lol
As for Kieth, I was not thinking about any of his posts in particular. Kieth is another one of those fine individuals that does the hobby proud and of which I am pleased with his participation of this site!

But we know its all for fun (or should) and rarely does anyone take it too personal. I love a good debate and to mix it up, I can see allot of other guys do too. :-)

The problem is that many folks tend to forget that everybody brings something to the table wether they fly competition or in their own backyard. Some guys flying competition would last longer in the hobby if they would spend some time learning about their birds before trying to compete. Likewise, some backyard fliers that always brag about their birds need to "put up or shut up". The key is respecting each other and each persons goals in the hobby.

GABE454, DON'T TAKE WHAT'S BEING SAID THAT WAY..YOU SAID YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A BACKYARD FLYER ,THATS YOUR BUSINESS YOU DON'T EVER HAVE TO MEASURE WHAT YOU'RE DOING WITH YOUR BIRDS BY THOSE WHO COMPETE..EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT....WHAT WE'RE SAYING IS TO THE GUYS THAT TALK SHIT AND DON'T EVER DO NOTHING THEM ONLY!..IF YOU ARE WORKING YOUR WAY TO COMPETITION KEEP GOING YOU WILL DO IT SOONER THAN YOU THINK..BUT TO BE A BROTHER TO YOU I HAVE TO BE REAL WITH YOU IF THE ONLY BIRDS YOU SEE ARE YOUR OWN YOU'RE NOT HELPING YOU LOFT OR YOUR BIRDS AT ALL..THE ONLY REAL WAY TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE FROM GOOD BIRDS, GREAT BIRDS,TO BAD BIRDS IS TO GET OUT OF YOUR OWN BACKYARD SOMETIMES AND GO SEE SOME OTHER KITS SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE FOR REAL! "PUT UP OR SHUT UP" HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU BRO...KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO.....BE ENCOURAGED... WHEN I WAS SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WITH GUYS THAT WERE SELLING ME CULLS AND STRAYS ON PURPOSE AND LAUGHING BEHIND MY BACK, I DIDN'T GET DIDN'T DISCOURAGED I CALLED JERRY HIGGINS...LOL! ---------- rOLLerManx0

ok T, Here you go bro. Personally for me competetion narrows my focus and makes me hyper aware of my birds condition and ability.Makes me study harder in the breeder loft for the click pairs. I do things I don`t feel I would do as a BF. For instance,I would not utilize the yo yo system or the Higgins prep post if I didn`t fly in competetion. I would have a hard time getting motivated to properly train a team of rollers if it was just me.
Seems a lot of the BF`s that have recently joined, have a network, know each other, and are members of various local organizations. Therefore the need to compete on a national level might seem uneccessary.
Every situation is different. Some guys don`t fly because they are in a remote area. Others;been there done that, got the scars to prove it. Some guys are tired of the BOP`s. Some have cut back or pursued more fruitful avian interests and just keep a few for fun. Some guys just don`t play well with others.
As you said earlier T,for the most part it`s a lot of chain pulling for laughs. I think some might be serious but for the most part, who REALLY cares? Fly On my brothers fly on! ---------- V99

This may seem like a pretty dumb statement at this point, but maybe some folks don't like being told to shut-up!Maybe a good name for the fly would be "Put Up or Don't Give Me That Line Of Malarky!"I don't know, sounds like it's not worth gettin yer tits in a knot about. If ya wanna compete, compete but if you don't,enjoy 'em to the upmost. well guys i guess i fit in the backyard flyer club but i do enjoy putting my birds up for who ever. i might not have the best birds but i got good birds. i feel that all of us as roller guys should never be ashamend to fly our birds for any one. iv had jack meyers come over and he is a pretty known pigeon guy. i have flown what i consider junk and he always points out the one's that are doing right things and it gives me an idea on what i should be looking for. now that is what its all about little by little im building a good family and in the long run it will pay off. i do fly in a local club with the ezr guys and it is fun but i choose not to fly in the big flys because i dont desire to win the world cup or fall fly i dont care for all the attention it brings to your house just me
sal [BlackCrowLofts]
p.s [dont chase a mans name iv learned that even if you get birds from him you still got to figure them out it will be up to your selction and flying ability ]

I flew comp with another breed and one thing i noticed is when your on top, there's always someone trying to bring you down and there is never a shortage of trash talking,so the non flyers aren't the only ones talking sh..!!.This to me is one of the worst thing for the sport. The same goes for the guys who like to put others down because their not on the same track as them.I think it's a good idea to not categorize as there are always exeptions to everything. There's an old saying in spanish that says..."Las cosas caen por su propio peso" transalated.."All things fall by their own weight" and this certainly applies to the pigeon hobby and it's people!

My turn. To all that don't know me. My name is Keith London. I live in LA on 83rd and Western. I fly kit competition and have been doing so for 16 yrs. I've done very well and very bad. I try to promote flying. I choose to fly kit competition because, watching a kit of solid rollers break in unison is a beautiful sight to see.
The put up or shut up fly is not new. It was designed to make THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ALWAYS TALKING stop talking and fly something. I myself will compete in any roller fly. It don't matter if its individual or kit comp. I don't even knock the individual flyers for their beliefs. Its just that SOME say they breed for the individual but can't show ONE in the air BUT SEVERAL IN THE SHOW PEN. I feel if 10 of us kit comp. guys flew against 10 individual in an individual comp. we would win. If we flew in a kit comp., the individual guys wouldn't stand a chance!
If you don't agree, THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT. LIKE I SAID,(PUT UM UP OR

I understand you're up here in sacramento. This is your chance to show us in the air what ya got. There are 7 or 8 of us that get together and fly 7 or 8 times a year.
If you're not into kit comp, what do you think about a single bird fun fly?

Kenny nailed it on the head....and another dude talked about loft blind. The term put up or shut up is not for the everyday back yard flier...it is for the yapper...the one that talks about how great his birds are...but won't put them to the test...and that is comp against other teams.....It does not have to be the big two..it can be club flies....If you are not yapping about how great your birds are...then nobody will challenge you to your yapping.
As for kenny's comments on comp bringing out the best...that is soooo true...being an ex-athlete....I tell you what....comp...makes you strive for excellence...PERIOD!!
I recently got back into racing ATV's...The back yard riders are good....and "Think" they are fast...but when you put them on the mx track in a race situation...they get smoked....here is the reason...when I ride to race...I am paying attention to every detail...how the bike is doing....dampning and rebound on my shocks has to be dialed...what sprocket will I use...tire type....the sag on the suspension...my body English when I ride...am I in shape enough to go balls to the wall for 3 laps.....and the big one...is I practice the Doubles and Triples and tabletops (jumps)...and the fact that when you race...you have to let it all hang out....now riders that are back yard riders are not looking at every aspect of riding...right down to the position on turns...my point being is even when I was "just riding"....I was not as good a rider as I am when I train for a race.
Now....when there is comp...you are constantly seeing other riders and comparing to them...when you are back yard riding...or "sissy dune riding"...you may think you are better then you are....I have had plenty of Yappers on ATV's tell me how great they are...and you get them on the track...they Endo...or Loop it on the first jump and all they see is my roost!!...
The point is..comp makes you look at things that you don't usually see....PERIOD!! and you see more birds or riders..LOL..to compare to yourself as a manager and your program
Does that mean that all backyard fliers..suck...NO...I have been humbled on a track by Backyard riders...that just choose not to race.....but like backyard fliers...that are shifting into that next gear and not tached out are few and far in between...and that goes for anything that you do for fun or compete in....
Drag racing, football, horse racing, roller flying, hell grocery bagging comps....once you put the word comp on the line....you practice more and put more into it...
So I will say this about my birds...I fly comp...yes...does that make my birds better...no...does it make me a better manager...yes.....So I like to say this...my birds"are as good as any...and better then many"
There are guys that compete that are not very good either...but let me put it to you this way...I have NEVER seen a guy that competes that has mediocre birds or skill...brag about there birds or skill...why..because everyone has seen what that person has....but I have heard NUMEROUS times...guys that don't compete that have mediocre birds and skill talk about how great there birds are....
Either way..everybody is right...I know that Tony is right..because I have won comps with his birds...before he entered the big comps...and his birds are the backbone to my strain....second....I totally agree with Kenny and Loft blindness...
