As a newbie and reading your posts, I one; have a great time and two; am learning alot about this breed. It is great to read all the advice and opions. Someday I hope to post my own. As I read about who is now #1 and about individual experience with those names I had to wonder:
WHAT WAS THE BEST PIECE ADVICE YOU EVER RECIEVCED FROM YOUR ROLLER MENTOR OR ANOTHER FLIER?

Welcome rtwilliams, I read alot of books of the Birmingham Roller so i call some of these Men my mentor. "If you Pay attention to your pigeons, your pigeons will pay attention to you..Paul Bradford,,,
"As far as birds to be use for future breeders, see that none go into your breeding loft that is not a bird of proven quality ". "Do not give away birds of poor quality that will only produce birds of the same" and preach that to all beginners Bob Evans---- ----- Ralph....

I have 2,
1st was from Heine Bijker, "you need to get birds that roll with their wings up. Yours roll with their wings out".
2nd was from KGB "that bird is as good as it gets. you need to get 20 more just like her in your kit".
In both cases, my initial reaction was defensive and I was pissed. Then, after I took some time to think about it, I was able to accept the comments as constructive criticism and move forward.
After Heine's comment, I went out looking for rollers with better style and speed. Now I have a hard core line based on 2 hard core MAster flyers with straight Pensom blood.
After KGB's comment, I put that bird inopt the stock loft and never flew her again. The pair that made her is back together and she is on my 2nd best cock. (her dad is my number one)
I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys get pissed and/or hurt and in a few cases quit flying completely when criticized by the judge opr other flyers. I look at the criticism from guys like this as pure gold now.
The key is to keep your humility and not be defensive. Look at who is giving the criticism and judge it accordingly and decide what actions you will take based on the input.
Of course, much of the criticism comes from those who are only talking. The key is to be able to discern the valid from the invalid.
Regards,
Ken firl

Hi rtwilliams......
Best advice ever is simply this:
====> "Breed Best to Best"!
....however
It's imperative that 1 of the breeders be a pre-potent rolling pigeon. This means it will produce good rollers on any decent pigeon. Something that's quite important also is that the siblings & offsprings need to be able to do the same thing. Many around here will say the general idea is that the birds must be able to reproduce themselves.
Moving on.... you need to learn the in's and outs of the rollers that you are breeding, producing & training. I've been taught that the tighter the gene pool we work with, the easier it is to develop & bring our family of performers together in proper fashion.
NOTE: We can start with a couple pair of decent performers and after a few years of hard work, anticipation, education, dedication, motivation, good selection out of the air and good loft management...etc, we can end up in a similar situation as some of the top flyers in the world.
...but
Keep in mind that it might take us a little longer to do so, but the road to sweet success is well worth the effort if you effortlessly pursue it.

I was taught what was right and what wasn't , and that means analizing the roll, any bird not capable of doing it correctly from start to finish is a cull, that means no wingswitch or glitch what so ever, wings up and exiting the roll correctly and cleanly at a decent velocity, and doing it with stability (no bumping and knowing when to cut loose and when not to). Who was most instrumental for me and teaching me was Jack Meyers, I see far to many new guys with no guidence or the wrong guidence accepting far less, and that isn't good for them or the breed ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I think one of the best advice I got for flying a kit in competiton was from Ken Firl. He told me to fly four or five at a time and pick out the best ones. It took me 1 1/2 days to fly four or five birds but when I did this I had a great team together that was more competitive. I put special band rings on those that should be in the A team and now I will keep track of them. I have noticed some I pull out a year later for one reason or another. When you have hold over birds, this is the way to go to forming a kit. I used binoculars and flew different colors so I could tell each one apart and made V in the tail or cut the corner of a tail to keep track of two checks or two blacks when running out of colors or white flights to keep seperate. Some birds have a good day and others have a bad day so you should fly them again in a month the same way just five at a time and you'll see the ones working. They will roll a whole lot more if with other birds rolling as aposed to flying some good rollers with some straight flyers.
the second best advice I would give to someone else is keep good records so you can know just what pair that awsome bird came out of so you can make more and eventually get a half sister and half brother pair going. This came from Chan Grover who always can make some champ rollers. Bill C

Here is a bit of advise I always try to share. You will breed your best birds. You won't buy them or be given them. This holds true every time if your in this breed for the long hall! So get some good stock and start breeding or you will never get to your best. KGB

What Kenny wrote below is some of the best advise there is and he gave me the same also along time ago. I'll dwell on it here a second, solid prooven breeders are rare, so no one is selling or giving away their best,it is as simple as that, you HAVE to find and or breed them yourself. 2/3rds of the hobby does nothing but chase pigeons instead of building a solid stud, it is an endless cycle for them and I did plenty of that myself at one time. My own best breeders today (stock) were born, flown and stocked by myself, and they are better producers than my foundation, one of which I might add started out as a foster for me until I dicovered it's worth. I might add that once I smartened up and got honest with myself I figured out that I only had a handful of good ones, and once I culled out the rest of the stock loft and honed around those only then did I start moving forward . As a note if I had to start over I would be looking for a kit of squeeks, that way you have the same chances as the original breeder of finding a couple of good ones to hone around.
(Here is a bit of advise I always try to share. You will breed your best birds. You won't buy them or be given them. This holds true every time if your in this breed for the long hall!
