#439 is a typical Birmingham Roller Dam with strong Pensom genes.
I call her the blur. Please don't ask me why!

Greetings Brad... it's great to hear from you!
After analyzing my breeding records and charting the graphs on my aerial performance scorecards... I think I have the answer to your question.
I had the hen #439 in the photo above, mated to her full brother #438 Bluecheck Beard Cock a 10ft-25ft stud.
....and
From that pairing there is one bird that really stood out. It's an apple-bodied, tight feathered 10ft-25ft bull-eyed Black Spangle Hen #1964 with spectacular kitting skills and decent control on the roll. I plan to mate 2005 NBRC 1964 Black Spangle Hen Bull Eyes with an offspring from the younger full brother to #438 and #439.
We are referring to #464 Fast Bluecheck Beard Wht/Flight Cock (a 25-footer displaying a nice tennis ball before finishing). #464 was mated to Hen #455 Medium Black/Whiteside Badge 15ft with good form in which only 2 birds were stocked.
1) NBRC F1959 Bluecheck Self Hen -- 30ft Stocked/Deep 2) NBRC F0782 + NBRC 1974 Dark Bronze Check Cock
From this mating (Sire: #464 Bluecheck Cock + Dam: #455 Whiteside Badge Hen) we were fortunately blessed to have NBRC F0782 + NBRC 1974 Dark Bronze Check Cock (looks black) delivered to us here in the Deep Spin Lofts breeding section in their 4th clutch.
NBRC F0782 + NBRC 1974 is a 40ft-60ft screamer that had bumped once.... but never again after that. This indicated to me that this roller had the physical stamina and mental toughness to put on the brakes in the air whenever necessary.
NOTE: Out of 8 birds bred from #464 and #455, NBRC F0782 + NBRC 1974 is the only black bred from them and the only black cock I have stocked so far. Back in 2006 when I noticed that this bird in the nest bowl had a rather dark beak and dark meat.... and both of his parents had rather pinkish beaks.... I instinctively knew to double-band the squeaker and keep a watchful eye on him in the air.
Good golly miss molly! He was a keeper for sure.
I plan to mate the best cock from the pairing of NBRC F0782 + NBRC 1974 to 2005 NBRC 1964 Black Spangle Hen Bull Eyes back to #439 Bluecheck Beard/White Flight Hen 20ft tightspin/velocity. This I hope will help to tighten up my gene-pool of high-velocity spinners. According to Mr. Pensom, the best birds come 1st." in red check and dun, the most regular performers and mixtures of these colors, 2nd." in blue check, the most stable, 3rd." in black, 4th." tortoiseshell, 5th.; dun bred reds, and so on.
{P.S.} Keep in mind that #438, #439 and #464 all have the same Sire and Dam. It may take me forever to get it the way WH Pensom had intended for it to be, but one day I plan to actually get it right!
Talk to you later....

Marcus Sound like you have a breeding plan in place and have keep good notes on the kit birds. What interested me was your nest bowl observation about "dark beak & dark meat" with the parent both having a pink beak, you study your birds pretty good and that is what it takes. Brad winward

Hey Brad... check out my mobile Deep Spin Lofts Kitbox/Breeding pen before I painted it. There are 2 sets of dolley wheels like the kind professional movers use to move refrigerators and other heavy stuff bolted up under the cage.... and it also has a wired floor for droppings.
This is my 3rd residence with this particular bird pen and it's built like a vault! That's right, utilized its pigeon housing services at 3 different properties. Now that's what I call maximizing one's investment in the roller business!
For the record; there is room to comfortably house up to 30 flyers inside. Also, when I breed birds (4 pairs), I put 4 nesting boxes on the floor and leave all the V perches overhead for the ultimate in pigeon comfort & aviary relaxation.
Take a lookey lew below.....

You know what Thor... you are correct. That was #439 before she even went through her 2nd molt. She must of been no older than 4 or 5 months old in that picture.
Hmmm....
If I'm not mistaken, that snap-shot was taken like a little more than a month after I purchased #439 and 16 other young kit birds of the Plona family from Vietnam marine veteran Dan Smith of Napa, California.
She's been bred and filled out a lot since then. The body is tighter, full figured and there appears to be a little more white in the plumage.
Tell you what... I will take new pictures and post them on RPDC when I get the time.
Okay... talk to you later

Good morning Scott.... it's really great to hear from you!
I'm 42 years old and friends call me the Black Jack `la Lane he... he....
I was watching Larry King Live on satellite tv last night and there was an exclusive interview with singer/entertainer Janet Jackson and Larry says to her: "Welcome Janet, so you're 42 now"... and Janet says assertively: "No Larry I'm 41".
NOTE: She looks dammmm good at 41 if I must add.
...well anyway
I try to take proper care of myself with regular physical exercise and dieting like Janet Jackson, Sylvester Stallone, Suzanne Sommers, Wesley Snipes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Howie Mandell, Steven Seagull, Vannah White, Denzell Washington, George Cooney and all of the other folks out there who are 40 and older and still looking fantastic!
Hmm.....
There was a time when I could bench press 425lbs off the rack.... but I'm getting up in years my friend. It's just a shade over 350lbs of Olympic Steel Plates as my max on the bench these days.
As a matter of fact, It's a little after 3:00 a.m. (PST) and I'm headed out the door to 24 Hour Fitness for a light work-out. Yes indeed; "Health is Wealth"! Maybe do a little cardio, quadraceps and some ab work.

Marcus I think Scott was mistaken when he mentioned my name on this thread. I "think" he was probably talking about one of his other friends who is always sposting comments about gays, roller guys in dresses and tutus, and other girly things. I hate to speculate but the only name that comes to mind is ol what's his name? You know he goes by a few different handles and initials. Nice guy, but it must have been him. Or maybe not. But the two of them seem to have a fixation about this kind of stuff. I can tell you one thing for certain, just for the record, it wasn't me. You know these guys. Greetings Cliff... I'm glad you took the opportunity to set the record straight. From what I can gather, Scott stated it was merely a joke and for you "not to get your Tu Tu up in a twist."
I seriously try not to get into any confrontational squirmishes with others. Over the years I've discovered that negative confrontations are bad for us mentally (it causes high levels of stress)... and can possibly destroy us physically if we just so happen to offend the wrong folks.
Hmm...
I've met a lot of interesting people along life's road... some good and unfortunately some of them bad. So.... whoever said whatever negative things about me around here has been forgiven by me.... that is if they were said. As a matter of fact, I've totally dismissed them as being basically irrelevant to my master-plan for survival.

Good morning Gary.... it's great to hear from you!
Hey.... I'm going to have to take an up to date picture of my 2005 Plona Redcheck Cock NBRC F1952. This cock has very strong Pensom genes! His mother and father are full brothers & sisters that were bred by Vietnam Marine veteran Dan Smith of Napa, California.
NOTE: The sire to 2005 Plona Redcheck Cock NBRC F1952 was a frequent Bluecheck Self Cock (10ft-20ft range) and frequent. The dam is a Red Check Self Hen 30ft fast, tight and balled up like a chipmunk in hibernation when rolling downward from the kit. She was not as frequent as I would have liked her to be and was the highest flyer of all my kit birds back in the day. However, she brings a tremendous pool of strong Pensom/Plona genes to the breeding pen that any knowledgeable roller breeder wouldn't mind working worth. She's currently on a Lavender Cock (Norm Reed bloodlines) to enhance frequency. They are throwing me Ash Red Bars with black ticks, Duns, Lavenders, Dun Bars and Red Checks. Waiting on the next round of eggs to hatch to see what new goodies are in store for the kit box.
Oh yeah... there is a few photo's of Plona Redcheck Cock NBRC F1952 around here, but they are just shades and glimpses of him with other birds in the loft. The picture quality is extremely poor and really not worthy of showing.
....also
My scanner is not working too swell right now as we are having computer malfunctions. As soon as I can get my computer networking tools trouble-shooted and straightened out.... then I will post them when time allows me to.
Talk to you later...

I'm thinking about mating Plona Bluecheck Hen #439 20ft tightspin to '05 NBRC F1951 "Deep" Plona Blue Grizzle Cock (30ft-50ft and fast). I'm utilizing my "Breed Best to Best" system here.
I had F1951 mated to his half sister last year; referring to '06 NBRC 1597R Red Tortoise Shell Hen. She's a dandy 25-footer with exceptional velocity on the back-spin. This pair produced a few nice spinners for us at Deep Spin Lofts. However, after there was 1 rolldown (a tortoise shell cock) I decided to discontinue this union.
I really have a lot of high hopes for Plona Bluecheck Hen #439 20ft tightspin to '05 NBRC F1951 "Deep" Plona Blue Grizzle Cock. I am prepared for disappointment though. You just never know which pairs will actually click... and which ones that don't. You must try them out in the breeding pen in order to see what the deal really is.

Good morning folks...
It's 3:42 a.m. (PST) and I'm headed out back to the barn to check on the thoroughbreds. I'll click on the lights... rattle them a bit... and do what I basically call pairing.
What is pairing?
What I do is take a hen from the stock pen and a cock from the other stock pen and put them in a 2x4x2 exhibition pen. Then I will closely observe their compatibility (behavior) after having already taken key mental notes of what they've both done in the air.
NOTE: When you work from home (such as I do) then you can mess around with the birds just about anytime you like. Plus... I have no set schedule with my family of rolling pigeons. My birds are highly intelligent animals and fully understand it's simply the WILD WEST here at "Deep Spin Lofts" in Northern California.

Marcus, like I said before , it isn't rocket science , but yet it is a complicated breed no doubt. Here is a little something to chew on that once I figured out opened new doors as far as my insight into "my" birds. There is a little thing called "Roll impulse" the stronger the bird is mentally and physicaly the more roll impulse it takes to get the bird to roll, such birds can handle the hard roll well and can work thier tail off when at a safe ht. and yet be stable as can be,kit like glue no matter what, and be able to shut down the roll when need be , this is the kind of bird that I strive for. Take half of the roll impulse of that the bird that I described above and apply it to a mentaly and or physicaly weak bird and you have non kitters, roll downs, early landers ect. ,depending of course of the extent of the weakness vrs how much roll impulse. Just because a bird rolls down doesn't mean that it has too much roll, it just can't handle what it has. On the same hand a stiff just doesn't have enough roll impulse to over come it's mental stength.

Right on Scott! Thanks for the vernacular insight on how to get a positive handle on things. I wholeheartedly respect your wisdom in these matters.
