Now that hit a funny bone George ,here's one that has allways have be baffled, what if twenty guys took birds from a guy named say, Ike with a wife named Tina.
And all of them crossed other families onto them for reasons only known to them, would they still be called Ike & Tina's birds ?

I really have heard guys say that they flew this and that and did good BUT there was only 1 maybe two of those Funny Birds in the whole Kit.

And no they would not be Ike and Tinas birds anymore they would be Ikes and Mikes Birds LOL

Reminds me what the color breeders are doing. They put a couple of color birds in thier kit and if the kit does well they tell us that the color birds are kicking ass.

Same senerio.

Birmingham Rollers are said to be "lightly feathered" describing the muff birds that occurr. Some of the birds I am seeing at times are way more than "lightly feathered" muffs.

I've seen some Smiths that were sweet with faily heavy muffs, I have also seen some cross Wests for heavy Muffs. I have always been told that if they have feathers on the back of thier hocks they are crossed ,nice side view of that chker.

You can bet someone trying to breed them George, inbreed the hell out of a color bird and see what pops up, then inbreed a Birmingham.
That George is the difference between a true breed and something else.
That something else can't hold up or breed true without the true breed to bury the mutt, pretty basic stuff actualy

What the heck does a short beak have to do with anything ? are you useing a Higgins bird with a short beak to justify all of these wierd projects ?
And of all families as that is a 100 0/0 to the bone bred for performance family.
Hector, if thats what you want to do and that is what you enjoy, go for it, you don't have to justify it with anything other than "that is what I enjoy doing!! )

Scott dont get uptight, you must have some short beat tumbler looking birds too.
i also have a bird from a Norm reed line that has a short beak, bringing in the short beak had to come from something els didnt it?or is it too much inbreeding.Hector

Actualy no I don't have any Hector, but I know what you are talking about as I have seen them in some of the old 313 stuff.
It isn't due to inbreeding unless you have one and start inbreeding a line around it where you get more and more.

George,
you can fly a kit of English trumpeters with two fan tails in the kit. If they out roll all the other kits in the WC your kit of pigeons will win.. No rules that you have to fly Birmingham rollers in the WC or NBRC.. Rare colored rollers are proof of that.. What are those saddle mutts anyway?? LOL KGB

Guys
You are right that Scott is a good guy. He only wants us all to enjoy our birds.

It would be a drab world without colors in it, if all the houses looked the same, if all of us thought beauty had to be 5'2" 36-22-36 and blond. The fact is we all enjoy things a little differently.

Cars are not all the same colors, cars come with all kinds of different packages and options. Life is full of options. Take our little feathered friends, for instance. Many years ago, men were playing and crossbreeding pigeons to enhance their rolling ability. They used whatever they could get their hands on at the time. Several breeds of "tumblers" were used in the mix. Even today, if we inbreed long enough, we may get a few "throwbacks" that resemble more tumblers than rollers. There were several different breeds used in the early development of the bird , we now call the Birmingham Roller. The original Birminghams are known to have had crested and muffed varieties....and that's a fact.

Today, we are still developing our birds. The breed is not set in stone, in my opinion, the breed is still exploring its genetic differences. We are finding more and more unique traits , we enjoy breeding for. Performance is still the number one trait we breed for, and that performance trait is the reason , we fly competitions.

KGB is 100% right, when he states the fly's are not just for a specific breed of pigeon. The fly's are open to any pigeon that can "SPIN" for at least 10 feet.

The interesting diversity of colors and feather adornments, found within the roller pigeon, can keep us striving for individual goals forever. Men who try to lock us in to " their perception" of what a roller pigeon should look like, do little to promote the roller fancy. This forum is dedicated to men who share their optimism for enjoyment of the roller fancy.
YITS,
Cliff
