Speaking of Juan...
I took that picture above a few years ago with him and Terry D at Keiths Roller shop. I recall the photo vividly because I was looking to purchase a new home at the time so I can further pursue my dreams of bird husbandry with Birmingham Rolling pigeons.
...well anyway
At the time I was staying in Newport Beach, Calif. at the Marriot Villas on a 1 week time-share vacation. Talk about a breath-taking view above rocky cliffs which overlooked the Pacific Ocean.
Back to Juan. I recall him explaining to me how I should get a mortgage loan financed through his connections. Wish I did, but it never happened. When I left the Marriot Villas in Newport Beach I drove up north along the Pacific Highway and stopped off several hundreds miles from the L.A. area in a ocean front town called Half Moon Bay. Drove to a nice area and took the photos below. 75 yards behind this home is a sandy gateway to the Pacific Ocean.
Hmmm....
I was thinking to myself at the time that the folks who owned this home must have one of the most spectacular and breath-taking views I have ever seen of the Pacific Ocean. I was shocked at how accessible to the general public the luxurious home and the beach behind it were.
NOTE: The area was very wide open... not fenced off like parts of Malibu. Quite an extraordinary scene!

When I was driving back to the Bay Area from sunny Southern Calif. in 2005, I stopped off in a beautiful upper income town called Half Moon Bay to relax and spiritually meditate by the sea.
....well anyway
Me and the wife was driving around Half Moon Bay munching on caramel Fiddle Faddle popcorn and noticed there were streets that go all the way back to dead ends where there was sandy seashore we could walk on.
...so
We parked, got out and started observing some incredibly gorgeous new ocean-front homes. As a matter of fact, several weren't even gated or nothing yet. You could walk up to the front or back door on some of the homes. Several of those ocean front homes were like brand new!
It freakin blew my mind.... because it was so darn peaceful just relaxing and walking along the sandy seashore and admiring those million dollar homes. I felt this was a once in a life-time opportunity so I had to go back to the car and grab my camera in order to take some snap-shots. You just never know Efren... next time we drive through that area it might be a gated community to keep out the riff-raff.

At first I was afraid to take pictures of million dollar homes without permission from community residents out of fear that somebody might call the fuzz and say they thought I was a burglar or something. Oh well... it was my lucky day. No 5-0 harrassed me in that community. he...he...he
NOTE: Below is a high-lighted link to the map of Half Moon Bay, Calif. It has been known as San Benito and Spanish town. It's about 25 miles south of San Francisco and 45 miles north of Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Hundreds of miles from the San Gabriel Valley.

Not too good. They started off like they have been the week prior, but then they went up, up and away....
Even though they shot up, they weren't working as a team and had 1 that kept coming out. Hopefully I can correct this and have them going again for the w/c.

Efren... are you feeding your kit birds the standard 1 Tuna can full of grain for every 10 birds?
Do you think overfeeding might be the problem?
Now that the winter months have passed, I've pulled the popcorn and substituted barley with a wheat, milo and millet mixture for my kit birds. They seem to be kitting a little better.... but it's still not good enough for me. I need to put in more work and watch the 8 week old birds more closely. It appears some of them are flying a little erratic (burning off baby pigeon fat).

No, I think I believe the reason was because I feed them at 4pm the day prior and I flew at 8am. Not sure what I was thinking???? I guess I was just excited of getting back into the mix.

Okay now I see. I've done that many times and always regret doing it. I'm afraid that if I haven't fed my kit birds at all that day, then when I wake up in the morning and open the kit-box there could possibly be a dead or sick bird in there. I've learned to never fly early the next day when I feed late. Just asking for disaster by doing that (feeding late and flying early in the morning).
Sometimes it's okay to let'em go hungry every now and then. It's imperative that we let the birds know just who the boss is. And it also helps the birds to learn to trap quick.

I just flew 2 kits. My next door neighbor who is an aeronautics mechanic for Travis AFB had the privilege of watching Birmingham Roller pigeons in the air for the very 1st time. Blew his freakin mind!
He said:

Yep,
Flew my A team that looked like Sh*t. Had some spinning very nice but had 2-3 birds out for a good portion of the time. Falcon stopped by along with the cooper. 18 went up only 17 returned. Hoping that it just got a little lost and will return later because I didn't see them leaving with anything. Flew my young kit and they all kited well and flew at a nice speed with a few turning over. Hopefully in a few months this will turn into my A team.

Hmm....
The way my birds have been behaving in the air lately... flying all over the place with unsatisfactory kitting, I wouldn't even put my birds up against West of England Tumblers.
I need to strategically come up with a master plan. Maybe I'll give Juan a call... or better yet an email. He always gives me sound advice in regards to rollers and stuff.

I think losing the birds that I lost has hurt my kit as well as them being scared at everything that they see.

Efren the same problem with me, I don't know what is going on with them. They were doing ok and now that I lost one of the best birds in the kit I don't like it how it's going.
They don't kit and are flying too low and fast. I got hit again yesterday I didn't lost any but one got cut and all his tail gone.

This is what we go through almost every day. She almost got taken the cooper pass right by her. She stay holding in the tree for almost 30 minutes.
The cooper in the right side of the palm.
He got lucky, no tail and a minor cut.

damn quick sorry to hear that.how is the roller doing? the bird in the tree looks camouflage .I can't imagine staying like that for 30 minutes really scare thats for sure..hope everything gets better for you Bro.. ---------

Oh my GOD quickspin... that's a very ugly gash on that birds back. It's just horrific! This is becoming an alarming problem that requires positive solutions which are acceptable to the Federal Government (Wildlife Fish and Game Dept).
I've done some thinking about the BOP problem in Southern California that many flyers of performing pigeons are facing today. I'm sure that the psychological impact from such BOP attacks can be quite a depressing dilemma for many flyers.
Hmm..... let's see now.
One of the reason you folks have so many attacks is probably because the Coopers have been rearing and feeding their young in the nest roller pigeon meat for years. The young Coopers from these nests in Southern, California grew up with an incredible taste for roller pigeon meat. As these young BOP (Coopers A.K.A Chicken Hawks) became mature, they honed their predatory skills and were successful in their attacks on flyers kits. Eventually these BOP mated and began the process of rearing their young on roller meat. This appears to be what is becoming a cycle of evolutionary ecological survival known to Ornithologists (bird scientists) as "prey of choice".
NOTE: Please keep in mind that this is purely my own theory and I could be totally wrong about my hypothesis here regarding Cooper Hawks and rolling pigeons.
In conclusion all I can say is to train your birds to trap quick, and don't release birds that sit on wires and linger on roofs because these type of pigeons can attract BOP too. However, the most important things folks can do is to ban together and form a union of petitioners to the Federal Government regarding this extremely sensitive matter.

How's the weather down there in the San Gabriel Valley?
It was 81 degrees yesterday and so I flew 2 seperate kits twice. It's suppose to hit 80 degrees again.... but I'll probably do the birds baths tomorrow.
Hmm....
Trying my luck again with double flight sessions today.

6:00 p.m.

Quick,
I'm not going to fly this Sunday after all. Had 2 birds hit pretty bad today and they will need to be out for this Sunday. I guess I cut them down too much in trying to get them flying at the right height. The rest of the kit flew well but not many breaks. I will prep them up for my fly on the 4th.

Feed them more milo and you can drop them to the height you want.
How can you make your birds fly higher? My birds don't fly higher than 2 poles. I have try everything pure wheat fed them till they can't eat no more. I just lock them for 3 days feed them all they want on the first day and 2nd and 3rd day fed them 2 tbl spoons/bird. I will see if this helps them get higher. I'm feeding them wheat/milo and a couple of pelets. Trying different foods to see the effects in them.

Efren it was the food the problem in my birds. LoL I was feeding them too little. Now I have them flying in a good height. They flying for around 1 hour with no action but got them to fly. Now I have to start to slow them down and make them fly for 25 minutes.

I flew a kit earlier. Noticed an extremely large flock of crows (about 50 birds) roosting in Evergreens roughly 50yds from my lofts. Think I'll lay low and simply lock down for a while. I will probably fly the rest of my birds later on today.
QUESTION: What's the weather like right about now in the San Gabriel Valley?

Well I have to fly them to get them working together. Moved up some very young birds to make it 16 birds. Hopefully they start putting something together soon.
Weather is great as usual out here. Nice clear sky, not too hot not too cold. Very mild breeze....

The current weather out here in the Suisun Valley is gloomy (cloudy overcast with a 60% chance of rain later in the North Bay).
It rained some last night. The garden is a little damp and my grass is still moist. As a matter of fact, about 5 minutes ago I noticed a few snails trolling along their secret paths out back. Might go on over to Home Depot in a few hours and buy a bag of snail bait and a 50 foot electrical 3 pronged cord.
...oh well
It's 55 degrees fahrenheiht right now... so there won't be any birds bathing @ Deep Spin Lofts today.
