looks like a dark tort, a light tort, a black self, 2 recessive reds, and a white, but I think it looks like the white had some black in its tail. I raised one just like it this year and am not real sure how to call that one. Good looking birds though... They should be good. Did you get them from Ron Kumro? ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

i always kept new birds in for about 2 weeks. You got a nice aviary cage on the front of the loft so they should be ok in anouther week.Just let them come out on their own. dont spook them. They need to know the loft is a safe place. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Looking at these pictures, I am wondering if these boxes are brand new, or what method are you using to keep them clean? Pigeons are beautiful, but nasty thangs! :)

Yea the nesting boxes are brand new...the whole loft is brand new!! LOL
But I made the nesting boxes so the bottom shelves slide out. This will make cleaning easier and if I ever have to replace the shelf it will be very simple and easy.

I let me birds out today for the first time!!!
It was pretty exciting and scary LOL When they came out they flew ontop of a pine tree and sat there for a good 15 mins. They then all the sudden took off in all sorts of directions...maybe something scared them.
I was scared because they started to fly out pretty far...as time went by they slowly came back and stayed in the area. Then 2 of the birds came in got food and went to roost. Then the remaining 4 followed later.
I need help/tips on what to do from here now....

Hi Game, Make sure they are kinda hungry when you fly them. I feed every day in the afternoon, so I fly just before feed time. They learn the schedule and will get the routine. fly, then feed. After a couple weeks and they are trapping in good for ya, if they only stay in the air for 10 or 15 minutes, thats when I start flagging them back up to make them learn to fly 20 to 30 minutes. They should be kitting well for ya in a couple weeks also.
They dont get supper till they fly the time. I keep the trap closed till I`m ready for them to trap in. I`m Boss, and they learn that quick. It might seem cruel at first, but they are smart and will learn quick.
After this all you got is lots of fly time to get them to the roll. 3 to 6, maybe even 8 months or more . Depends on the family, whoever you got them from should be able to tell ya how long it takes till they start rolling. Fly them every day if possible. This will help get them to the roll faster. Like practice. And last thing, watch the weather and the BOPs. Bad weather and high wind is a good way to fly them off. Most of us learn this the hard way. It really sucks too. LOL Also, if the sky sharks are hanging about, keep them in. You might have to lock them down for a week or so to convince the preds that there aint no free meal there. All your time, feed, and training aint worth squat if they get eaten alive by a pred. On that note, good luck, fly smart and hard. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Thanks for the help all! I really appreciate it!
Just another question... how many times a day should I let them out and for how long?? Should I leave the fly pen open so they can come out and hang around outside for the most day??

Most of the guys try to fly their youn 2 and 3 times a day! I only have time to fly once and they do alright! If you fly twice, only feed half rations when they come in. that way they don't get over fed and they won't trap the next day!
I never let my birds hang out very long! The BOPs will return from their migration soon and you will see they aren't somthing to take lightly. If they think they can get an easy meal, they will hang around until all meals are gone! We have to get really smart when they are hanging around! Lots of tricks, but they are smart and they get smarter all the time! We've been hollering routine, but when a BOP is around, you make the flying times anything but routine! If my birds get attacked, I immediatly lock down for 3 to 5 days, then I start flying at different times to confuse them!
Pray that you don't get falcons in your area, cause thats a whole different game! Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with one yet! ---------- Val

You better sadlle up then Bro! Your gonna have your hands full! I suggest at least a temp lockdown everytime you get hit and then keep your fly times mixed up when you do fly, if you do!
Don't keep feeding them!

Just had an HAWK ATTACK today!!! I came home from work and saw all the birds had trapped except one. I then let the rest of the birds out. About 5 mins into it im standing about 15 feet away from the birds and BAM! A hawk flys out of the trees!! The hawk hit one of my birds and feathers went everywhere! I yelled and ran towards the hawk which didn't have a great grip on the bird and it sent all but 2 of my birds flying into the sky. I then got all the birds to trap... VERY CLOSE CALL!! :x

Yes, especially when you are surrounded by pine trees. It's hard to tell where the BOP is going to attack because they are always hiding in trees. I had an attack yesterday, but none of mine are hit. Your birds are still very young and they aren't really good at out-running the hawk. My younger are always the first to go because the hawk can tell..it only attack a certain bird. ---------- W.Cha

Game sounds like you are over feeding. You better get a handle on the feed can. You dont want birds to lounge around outside. That is asking for a hawk attack. If mine dont trap in five minutes or less I cut the feed. Sitting on the roof or in trees is the worst thing that you can do. That is the Coopers favorite ambush site.
