Most will think I am being a P*ssy but I just had 2 rollers and 1 homer GET TAKEN! ONE JUST got eaten.. >:( and another stupid f**** just got my yellows.. 1 yellow gone and 1 Neiebl and 1 homer. No way can I handle this.. NO WAY! In future I may again in distant future. These year round goshawks are ruining me!!!!!!!!
---------- Andrew C. Home of the Yellows
Nah not necessarily forever.. In couple years I may start up in flying them again at a different location. But definitely not at this location. I will show you where I am; Located right in the country in trees. 66% of my land is spruce treed and the hawks live in there and watch.. Not even worth it, rather raise fancy's for a bit. I will definitely keep some of my rollers.. Some Neibels, Some yellows, and my tamest for now.

never say your done you just starting in the game .just lock up and learn patience and control while you doing it and in the future know that this is the name of the game .and never breed birds in the time that you know you have to train them when the BOP is around.. good luck.. ---------- Ralph

sorry JDA, that my birds just got torn to peices rips me to peices too. I can't do that. I have plenty of time in my life ahead to fly in different locations. This is such stupid BS that your not allowed to do anything with hawks. Well whoever stupid rule that is, If there dog or something would get eaten everything would be friggin different.

Take it easy Bro, Its hard and i feel for all you guys that are having problems, Your homers might be fine and just might out fly the goshawk, This is BS, Man if a cougar took your dog they would have that thing shot in seconds, There has to be some thing that can be done,Goshawks and Coopers are no where near the Endangered List, The Peregrine was removed years ago.
Anyways Dont lose your drive Drew, Its just goin to make you stronger. Keep your chin up. ---------- Tony.

Tony is right it just going to make you stronger ten years ago I spent good money on 6 rollers and bred like 50 and was left with 4 for 5 yrs they wouldn't let me fly but then when I stop flying they left I came back again last Oct spent big bucks got me 43 rollers and now I have 10 left.but I'm coming back strong I never wanted to lock up but now I do. so I lost all that money to BOP I was a fast food place here for them they would say lets go to Ralph roller avenue theirs take out food there like Burger king take out those bastard look at me.but now I play with them I lock up I come out they hit sometime miss I starve them by not letting them out .I'm having fun.. so you just hang in there buddy I know how it feels to watch your rollers be taken away and you can't do a damn thing about it but jump up and down swearing..to make things easier for me I don't get attach to them anymore and still that hurts you know you got a good one and they took a good one...peace ---------- Ralph

I wasn't close at all to these birds.. thats the reason in this likely event. I was close, I should just say I didn't get them too tame.. That stupid MF didn't give up for two whole hours he kept dive bombing the spruce tree when my red one was in and he finally got him when the bird finally took off for the kit.. :(

TT you are 100% correct. my buddy has 4 full kits full knowing he will only end up with one if he is lucky.. he has two resident coopers & four falcons.. and what sucks is all six will hunt together
falcons dive on the kit, and the birds scatter and the coopers move in ..

Cool off Andrew, geez.Either yer a flyer or not,but if you are ya gotta go at it with total determination, and take them birds I sent ya and breed the crap out a them next year then you'll have a load of birds to fly,,,,and lose alot of if you're in BOP territory which it seems all of us are nowadays.the thing is ya gotta realize when the BOP are going to be their hungriest, and that is NOW till it starts to warm up again in April-May and there are more other things for the BOP to eat.You may have thought they dissapeared in the fall when it got colder but its just that in the past when you were'nt flying birds yet,you just didn't see them around in the snow times. They are there, you bet.
EvilLofts, I hear ya on the W/C being too early. Here last year the prelims were early April which is just too early to fly relatively safely, for me here on the coast anyways.I think we need to start making noise about it so the powers that be will try to change the Fly to later in the year.Need you guys to say something down there no one listens to us Canucks. ---------- Kel. Hey Andrew,
I feel your pain man! I know how it feels like. A hawk got my most favorite homer here. It is depressing I know.
If it gives you comfort nature has this concept called "evolution" and "Natural Selection" theory by Darwin that gives species a chance to survive. In pigeon world nature has allowed these birds to have many babies as much as possible in order to survive. That is their evolutionary survival mechanism (adaptation) because they don't have talons to fight. They also evolved intelligence and resourcefulness. Pigeons then are survivors. Perhaps you just need to hold on and breed them.
Looking at your loft pictures I noticed a lot of trees. Is there a possibility of clearing them a little bit? Hawks are ambush birds. You just need to foil their ambush opportunity.
My last advice is perhaps that if you want to get a homer, don't get a long distance bird. Get a sprint or medium distance bird. They are faster. If you have a falcon issue, however, then I like to keep my mouth shut. I have no advice on that one.
Man, sorry to hear your experience again. This experience should help you grow even tougher and more determined instead of just giving up. You breed champion birds and you also be a champion (I can hear "Rocky" movie soundtrack now).

Andrew, I know exactly where your head is right now. In the spring of '07, my birds were getting hit on a daily basis. My location like yours is surrounded by trees. One day standing there with a recessive red in my hands and his lifes blood dripping through my fingers, I verbalized "I have no f***ing right to continue doing this." Through this forum I gave all of my birds away. I have regretted it on a daily basis! This year the crows moved back into my property, and I have been flying some crossbreds with very few losses-but they are not rollers!!! Do not make this decision hastily. You like me may regret it on a daily basis. Geo.

Hey guy,,,there are so many ways to catch these BOPs,and call the proper people to COME&GET!their precious birds and relocate it,DO some homework and see from how far they will return??? in other words PUT THE PRESSURE ON THE LAWMAKERS! It is a fact that the goverment uses our fabulous racing homers during all wars, and there is a federal law for killing them...WHY CANT WE STAND UNDER THIS LAW???? WHAT BECAME OF THE "NUISANCE LAW"where farmers could kill wild animals that became a NUISANCE????? Call the athorities let them answer these problems, and questions,WE are letting these people say and do what they want to us,..Lets get a little CREATIVE so we can enjoy our hobby.....119

Andrew.....it just seems like you have to know when to lock them down and when to try a fly them. Or just plain lock them down. As for watching your birds get hit...It happened to me twice this week, on 2 different days, at 2 different times of the day. Both hits were on 2 different young bird kits. So.. I figure its time to give the BOP a break from my restruant.....lol. I'll give it another try some time later next week. ---------- Fly High and Roll On

Windjammer, I have tried at several different times during the year. Year round hawks here due to the weird temperatures.. and great food supply.. First up, I live 30 mins south of a very large city where Peregrines are bred from high rise buildings; several of them every single year.. hundreds are bred.. Thats not too good here. There are millions of BOP in my prov. alone..

I'm flying mine on barley, milo and wheat. now they are flying slower, lower and shorter periods of time. I'm only flying 13 to 14 birds at a time and haven't had a problem. If B.O.P. come's in they scatter. Before I was flying larger kitts, and a bird or Two in middle would never see what hit them. So far so good, at least they get exercise... I can't play on the computer all day. HaHa. Enjoy the hobby.

Andrew I know I get depressed for at least 24 hrs when my birds get taken especially if I see them taken out of the air by a falcon.
I just chased a cooper a couple of houses down the street ( it took one of my brown birds I posted afew weeks ago)
I foend the cooper in the yard on top of the bird..I rushed it .it picked up the bird and then it dropped into some cedars like a rock i thought the bird was dead. I went into the cedar bush and there was the bird i picked it up it was alive and had now wounds but it was shaking. A miricle I took it home and it was fine
Andrew I raised 130 young this year and only half were left by sept. most of them left because they were spooked a few taken by the cooper.
Listen to Marios advice Stock all your birds I have to keep at least 30 pairs inorder to be left with a a couple of kits by the fall. Stock your best that way if you loose a youngster at least you got the parents.
You got room, build a bigger coop, keep more birds ,you did great at the show.
I know how you feel if I lost my best birds i would pack it in as well however because I stock them I know more young will be produced the following year
You a great ambassitor for the hobby not many young guys in it ... a soltution will come let nature take it course
Take care
John
