Some that I have learn.

Not to fly before a rain or after.

Not to fly late.

If the day seems perfect to fly don't fly.

Never turn your back on your breeders and leaving the door open for 1 second as they will go out. Twice has happened didn't learn the first time lost two exceptional breeders that could of help me out a lot.

I learned to fly out a bird and give it alot of air Time. Even if it has never seen the sky before and is already 2 years of age. It will do it some good.

Mistake #1-leaving the bobs open and unattended. A Coopers hawk went into the loft through the bobs and killed two pigeons. Never leave your bobs open and unattended-especially overnight!
Mistake #2-after seperating breeders in the autumn, I neglected to latch the door on the hen side of the loft. When I got up the next morning the hens were flying all over the place, and the hen which was improving the frequency of my birds regardless of which cock I bred her to was missing. Presumed killed by a hawk.
Flying the day after a storm is a big mistake-the hawks are always hungry.
Geo.

Man, that really would burn me to have my birds gone! My worst mistake was getting rid of my last bunch of rollers. This is my third official time raising these critters, I will not be talked out of them again! Did I tell you that I wear the pants around here?!!!!

I loaned a bird out to a new guy in the club and he never returned that black cock I loaned him. He even tried to pawn another black and said it was mine. What a dip stick. I did forgive him but will never loan out a breeder bird again.
Also make sure all your cage doors have a spring to shut them automatically. I know this has saved me a few birds over time or it would have been a msitake. Good Topic here Salas loft. Bill C

my worst mistake is leaving the trap open after dark waiting for a late bird to enter the kit box some birds just dont know when to trap its not like they dont know its where they should be they just dont trap.it is frustrating to me.i have little pactients when it comes down to this because i think the bird will trap but it stys out and then my dog kills it or a cat or something that is the biggest mistake i have made.

I will agree with Warpspeed on this one! But I will add that the other biggest mistake was letting go some breeders a little too soon...

Well,

Fly in bad weather...especially fog.....Never fly before or after a storm.....BOP are on it big time.....Never fly to close to sundown...birds dont have headlights......I make my doorways smaller then a normal door....sick of birds flying over my shoulder....spring loaded doors....leave traps closed...never unattended...BOP can get in....Had my girlfriend pull the White feed trays...she pulled the White water jugs....it was only 101 that day...but anyway....that be that.

I guess for me it was learning to be patient. And that my friends covers alot of territory.....lol. Not giving the birds a chance, is just one for instance.. My biggest problem is when I see something in another fanciers loft that I like, I try to incorporate it in my own loft. Causing me to "Reconstruct" my own loft again and again..
Their are some really good looking lofts out their.....

Great topic!

1- letting a kid take care of my birds while on vacation. 32 stock birds dead as well as there young and several kit birds
2- Trap left open to find an owl the next morning
3- Buying peds. Make sure and watch the birds fly. I did it again with the Caspersons I am working with I found some guys that had them and got excited and bought birds from different guys and now have 2 very different families.
4- To many projects, I still stugle with this one. It is best to stay with one family and one breed. I have 5 families and Flying Orientals, Flying West Of Englands and Galati Nazel Tuft rollers. Stay low on the projects.
5- Breed from the sky "no working no breeding"

Another thing Read and re-read the examples above!

Best of luck,

David Curneal

My worst mistake was putting birds back in the air after stocking them wanting to do good in the fly's.
I would keep loosing birds to BOP and over fly's and my stock loft was not advancing the way it could of due to my desire of wanting to compete and not looking ahead in regards to the stock loft...Kev

Feed. I learned allot how to feed after losing good birds to overflys, skying out of sight and flying long.

My biggest mistake thus far has been this.

When I got back into pigeons it was because of my kids. I wanted them to have the same enjoyment from pigeons I did as a youth. I didnt allow them to make the choices with their birds. I tried to 'help' them too much. Now, none of my kids are involved in pigeons. It's Dads' project not our project.

I also struggle with being patient, a mistake I make over and over. I should give some young birds more opportunity to develope and I shouldnt cull breeders until I have a solid idea what their offspring really are. I have culled birds just because they pissed me off one day, ... mistake. It takes years to build a good stock pen and kit of reliable workers.

My worst mistake was flying my birds after it rained for a week. #2 flying my birds on a, clear blue, calm day before checking the berometer. #3 trying to sneak in a fly in the middle of hawk season. #4 VIOLATING THE MIGRATORY BIRD TREATY ACT! (THAT REALLY COST $$$$)

#1. mistake = Buying birds from every pet shop and lawn show auction I came across and ending up with 100 culls that drove me crazy.... (I trashed em all, obtained two families of birds, crossed em and have been rolling birds every since.):)
#2. mistake = Opening up my yard to everyone who raised rollers and ending up getting just about all of my birds stolen.. (Now I'm alot more careful of who gets in the backyard.)

My worst mistake was not going to see my cousin when he offerred me some rollers . I was involved with homers at the time.

A couple of years later i decided to call him as I wanted to get into rollers unfortanately he was very ill and he gave his birds away he passed away very quickly after the illness struck.

His name was George BaBaris and in 2002 or 2003 he finished 3rd in the world fly. I regret not getting involved with the rollers earlier so that i could of enjoyed the hobby with him for awhile and also iwould have had some good quality birds from him. Its been 5 years and I am still trying to find the perfect family of birds .Geroge would have been a great mentor

Trying to keep both homers and rollers. Not enough time to race pigeons and fly rollers. Then both suffer. Bye Bye homers. Rollers are too much fun.

Not raising enough youngbirds. Raise more than you think you'll need.

My worst mistake happened in 1993 when I got rid of all my birds because of my parents not wanting me to have birds. But I guess it back fired because after I got rid of my birds I had to many free time in the hood South Central LA and started gang banging. Spent most of my life in an out of prison until I finished my last prison sentence of 27 months I paid my old friend Henry a visit and he got me back in the game and well im all grown up now and theres nothing in this world that will ever make me get rid of my little angels Till the casket drops Amezquita's Loft.
