Where did the white bar come from? I know that some do not approve of indigo but they roll like hell as well?

Hey Mike,

"White Bar" can be attributed to two common factors, Dominant Opal and Reduced. They both can express a "white bar" while sort of laying on top of any of the 3 basic colors. Also, as you mentioned Indigo often amplifies the POP of the contrast between the wing shield and the actual bar itself. The main indicator between Dom. Opal and Reduced is within the tail. Reduced will get rid of or push the tail bar to the very end of the tail. Dominant Opal will leave the tail bar in its place, but turn it white. Again, Indigo is a very common player when it comes to some of these colored birds, as it will act as an amplifier of the lacing and white within whatever pattern it's on. In some cases, unless you raised the bird, it's almost impossible to correctly identify the bird as Indigo - it's just that sneeky!

Reduced was first discovered in rollers, but I'm not 100% sure where dominant opal was first found, Or introduced into a roller pigeon.

Thanks,
Colors

Dominant Opal and Reduced are two separate genes. However, oddly enough they can both be on the same bird. That's again one of those situations where you would have to know what they were bred from and what they were bred for.

It's possible to have a Dominant Opal Reduced Blue-Check for example.

Thanks,
Colors

Mike,

I find it more to your own benefit for even asking the questions. If you're motivated to understand, I'm here to provide you with the information - as best I can. It doesn't mean that you have to have the actual colors, in any breed, to gain the knowledge of what they are and how they work.

If there's a want for knowledge, the person seeking it will certainly find it.

Thanks,
Colors

I'm new here so forgive me if I make mistakes. I was given 12 Rollers when I left my racing pigeon club. Among these colored birds were 2 of what you are referring to as white bars. At least I think they are. Here's one, I didn't know what to call the color? How do I post a picture?

I don't have a clue. I was given 12 rollers from one of the race guys in our club as I was getting out of homers. The birds are all colors of which I don't know the names of. They were kept by a guy who as far as I know was into show birds, but from all accounts I've been told by another person that they are Birmingham Rollers. They are over weight and I've only had them since Dec. so I'll try to breed them and see how the youngsters do.When I get a proper cage to take pictures in I'll post them and their young ones. Dave

That is a Reduced-Bar. Notice the absence of any sort of tail bar. That's what Reduced does to the bird, as well as lightening up the wing pattern.

Thanks,
Colors

Jerry, my best advice would be to study top shelf birds and then compare the differences as those birds won't meet your goals, you will also find that feather color has nothing to do with the beauty of the breed even when on the perch.

Hey scott how can u make that assumption with no proof behind ur logic ? i explained to you what i was looked for in my birds but it seemed to me that everything i said went over your head you have never seen my bird fly but u assume it would not meet my goals and i qoute study top shelf birds as if i had not before and the color nothing to do with the bird having a perch in my loft
