Definitely the most interesting post that I have read for quite some time, with marvellous food for thought abounding in it.
Champion,as a kid, this word held no mystique,it was Gene Autrys horse, but now many years later, its less clear and definite,my own and honest opinion,is a Champion is a bird thats a top class spinner, most times its, flown and when breeding capable of throwing its like or even better for many generations,in short its lneage would have a great deal of prepotency in its future generations, the bird itself should be flown for years, therby showing it doesnt have any bad traits,at any point in its life, while it wont always be in top class rolling form, for a bird to be a true Champion, its the quality of its progeny that would earn it this title, without this, its an excellent roller only,so a true Champion Roller could only be judged historically, and without the genitic prepotency coming through on a regular basis for yourself and others,it is at best a great/brilliant roller, for its own life span only.
Posterity can and will be the final Judge, and the future Roller flyers will discuss the meaning and definition of present day Champions, and its they who will be in the position to judge how many champions are out there to day,the ones that leave their mark, when we are gone, just like we do,regarding rollers/flyers thats gone before us.

Good morning 7001....

The 514 birds here at "Deep Spin Lofts" are the fastest spinners I've ever had. I had Fireball rollers in the 80's and they don't compare in style or velocity to what I'm observing with the 514 gene-pool.

...also

These 514 birds of mine are not quite as "DEEP" as my Plona's, however they are better performers (crisp) in regards to velocity and style. Always a tight ball from several of my best 514 birds in the kit. I must add that kitting is fairly decent and they fly right along-side with the Plona's in the air.

NOTE: I'm crossing Plona+514+Reed in hopes of some spectacular aerial performers in the future. It may take me a few years, but I think it will be worth it.

1) Norm Reed
2) Bob Scott
3) Jerry Higgins

Three of some of the greatest roller men.

Their interviews on DVD seem like something very good to check out.

How are Keiths birds doing?

I wish his shop was still open. It was a great place to learn about Birmingham Rolling Pigeons and meet people.

Pensom created something very special regarding domestication and improvement of the Birmingham Roller Pigeon in the United States.

Thought i'd add that.

re: Breeding a Champion Roller Pigeon

Concentration on the stock loft is perhaps the best way for all of us to genetically engineer those top notch spinners (with champion rolling skills) we all desire for competition. The key formula here is having the proper stock to begin with in the first place.

NOTE: We get this particular stock by selectively picking the very best performers out of the air.

...and

The rest is merely left up to feeding, breeding, cleaning, training and routinely flying kits (proper loft management).

My ideal family:

1) Depth - 15ft-50ft in a tight ball

2) Style - Smooth rollers to very fast spinners (high velocity performers)

3) Frequency - 1 to 2 times per minute

4) Tight kitting is a must along with stamina

5) Stability - Must be able to last for years, not roll down, bump, or lose work rate with age.

6) Developement - Start spinning short (10ft-15ft) at 3 to 5 months and really bring on the 2nd season up to 60ft maximum.

7) Kit sensitivity - When the team breaks they all should go. The kit should even break on off days but to a minimum (waterfalls).

8) Performance Flight - Fly low and slow with a figure 8 pattern. It's very important to be able to see the birds perform in the air.

9) Good homing instinct - Once settled, the birds should be willing and able to get home if possible (weather permiting).

That wraps it up for tonight!

Hi (A TRUE CHAMPION ROLLER) to me would be a bird that was at its top of class as a learning pupil and made it straight into the A TEAM. It would then have to KEEP in the A team for atleast 2 years and during that time would have had to have been part of a WINNING KIT IN A COMPETERTIVE FLY. Once it had reachd these goals it would have to produce in the breeding pen for atleast 2 years and then make it into the stock loft. I might have set myself some high standards and some hard goals to reach but if a bird can pull this off surely it has made the honner and respect and has to be calld a (TRUE CHAMPION ROLLER). I have many great birds in my familey of birds but not yet one that has made the houner of (TRUE CHAMPION ROLLER). Yours in roll Harrison uk.

Hi Ralph. Thank you for your comments. And could I say that since coming on this website it has helpt me along with my reading, spelling, and understanding words, and putting them together. Before coming onto this website there is no way I could have described a TRUE CHAMPION ROLLER in words like I now can. SO I would like to thank everyone for using such good words that you all do to describing pigeons and on pigeon topics .Yours in roll Harrison uk. I have had trouble with my computer so sorry i never got staight back to you ralph.

Ralph I have had so much trouble with my breeding upto now as here in the uk we have had the coldest winter in over ten years. So what i have done his took all my birds out of the breeders section and put the hens in one kit and the cocks into a diffrent kit. How long do you think that I should leave them in there before I put them back into the breeders? yours in roll Harrison uk.

Harrison.... I like your thoughts and ideas regarding what a "TRUE CHAMPION ROLLER" should be like.

....and

I totally agree! Top of the class on the A-Team for 2 years.

The more time I spend feeding, breeding, training and flying Birmingham Rollers.... the more I modify ideas of what a champion roller is.

A CHAMPION:

My idea of champion rolling pigeon is this; a genetically well bred bird (preferably a hen) than rolls very fast (and frequently) in a super tight spherical ball of spinning energy with exceptionally high velocity on downward strokes towards the earth.

NOTE: This Champion performer should be able to majestically perform rolls from 5ft to 50ft. It's performance level (depth) should vary based upon aerial flying conditions and stationary obstacles that can possibly impede performance or injure the bird.

Another very important issue should be the ability to kit efficiently with the team. I am a strong believer in that proper kitting is one of the best methods for a "True Champion Performer" to reach its full potential.

KITTING: The flying unit should consist of 11 -to- 22 birds. They should fly in a figure 8 formation and bond closely together like grapes on a vine. If the birds wing-tips touch each other in flight that's okay.... however... I like for my birds to give each other a least 1ft of space while on the wing performing in the kit.

....also

When the birds begin to break (roll) they all should be dropping out of the sky like yo-yo's on a string.

This is how things should be done in the roller game if you are serious!

Talk to you later....

Marcus,

One of the MOST clear and exceptional documetations as to the perfomance standard of a roller pigeon. Very well thought out, precise, and well communicated. Your words offer a definitive direction for anyone seeking a flying and performing roller.

Well Done!!!

Hi Colors...

It's great to hear from you!

There is definitely some biological science involved here (Genetic Engineering) as well as the time, patience and tender loving care that is required to raise a stud of performing roller pigeons.

...and

Let us not under-rate the incredible talents we must possess in order to do this thing right (feeding, breeding, training, flying..etc), for that could be divergently unproductive in the quest for a "CHAMPION".

MEMO: A conversation across the table from a wise man is better than years of study of only books.... for its true that wisdom is acquired by an inquiring mind.
